I turned around and was startled to see a bird on the ground near me. I looked closer.

What appears to be a bird sitting on the ground looking at you.

A closer look reveals a grey stone with something white and a bit of orange leaf stuck on it, making it resemble a bird.

Success! I'm very happy with these, all grown from a single grocery-store sweet potato. Longest one is 10"/25 cm. #urbangarden

A row of small to medium sized sweet potatoes, freshly dug. They're laid out on a patio beside a garden trowel for scale.

I cut the vines off my sweet potatoes. (Getting nervous about recent raccoon and skunk activity.) Now the grow bag sits for a few days, hopefully drying out and toughening up the potato skins, and then I harvest! #urbangarden

A heap of green and yellow sweet potato vines and leaves on patio stones.

TIL: I saw this tree this morning near Ashbridges Bay Park. Nearly every branch has a coating of white cottony fluff on the underside. It seems to be caused by Beech Blight Aphids. They don't do lasting damage but they're not nearly as fun as Beach Blanket Bingo.

A grey branch with a few green leaves visible. The underside of the branch has a large patch of white fluffy things.

A dead tree trunk with a smaller living beech tree beside it. The beech branches are coated with white, cottony fluff on the undersides.

The holy grail, now with fresh woodchips. It's almost as if the city had recently acquired a lot of downed trees and branches that needed to be chipped up and spread around.

A blue disc golf basket surrounded by fresh woodchips, with green grass and tree trunks in the background. Sunlight is hitting the basket.

"Now I miss things like decision and certainty, beginnings and endings. In grown-up life, there are few demarcations. It is a great battlefield with constantly shifting fronts, that's how I see it. Where, for instance, do I end and Jude begin? When does childhood end?" #BookWormSat #ReadABookDay

Book cover for Sister Crazy (fiction) by Emma Richler. Two young girls sit on the edge of a dock, facing away from us. In front of them is a river or small lake, with trees on the other side. The girls wear old-fashioned sunsuits. Framing them, we see the bare feet of someone sitting on the dock behind them. The colours are muted and yellowed.

This doesn't really capture it but the colour was startling for a minute. I got lucky with this storm: power stayed on, no hail, no flooding, bins didn't even blow over. A lot of other people didn't have it so good.

Evening sky glowing orange after a huge storm. Some trees and a streetlight are silhouetted against the cloudy sky.

There I was, thinking that watching a Blue Rodeo concert must be a top-5 Canadian experience, when I find out my friends have outdone me by half-watching it while listening to the Argos game.
