I remember over 20 years ago a clerk at the Citi branch on Broadway at 56th in Midtown allowed me to open a checking account with a security deposit as a poor international student with no credit history. Modern research has developed advanced frameworks and procedures to ensure high ethical standards that protect humans, nature, and cultural heritage. However, when it comes to scientific collections – especially in the field of natural sciences, in contrast to art history and anthropology – researchers often assume that these materials are largely “unproblematic” and that ethical issues are minimal. After all, they are simply plants, animals, or rocks collected tens or even hundreds of years ago – what could be wrong with that?

Got copy printed afresh <1 mo ago - birders' classic “A Field Guide to the Birds of Japan" expanded & revised new ed. (=4th ed issued June 2015), 4th printing (Jan 2026). My old copy is 30+ years old, 1st ed, 6th printing (1994), but the price difference is only ¥300. Looking forward to the 5th ed.

upon an encounter with a roadkill, my thought process: it would make a nice complete specimen (skin/skeleton); sensing a rotten smell, skin and tissue cannot be saved; I don’t have a salvage permit to begin with; it’s an invasive species so I may not need one; wait a second! I must go to work...
