Tennessee Lawmakers Push Back On Police Claims About Marijuana’s Danger And Connection To Violence
“In the state of Tennessee, marijuana is the number one drug associated with criminal activity, including violent crime.” By Adam Friedman, Tennessee Lookout Tennessee lawmakers held hearings to discuss implementing a limited medical marijuana program, but the state’s top law enforcement group remains the most vocal opposition. Representatives from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, TBI, emerged as the strongest opponents, stating there were no circumstances in which they thought medical marijuana should be allowed in Tennessee. “Marijuana is in fact a dangerous drug, whose use poses a significant threat to public safety, and whose cultivation poses a threat to the environment,” said Erica Stephens, a TBI agent working on the bureau’s Dangerous Drugs Task Force, to lawmakers during the hearing.

DEA Launches New Registration Forms For Medical Marijuana Manufacturers, Distributors And Testing Labs
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has launched new specialized registration forms for additional types of state-licensed medical marijuana businesses beyond dispensaries that want to take advantage of federal protections in line with the Trump administration’s cannabis rescheduling process. The agency began accepting registrations from medical cannabis dispensaries with a new form in April, and other types of businesses in the state-legal medical marijuana supply chain have been able to apply using a standardized federal form for months. But now, DEA now has specific registration links for medical marijuana manufacturers, distributors and analytical labs…

The Latino Community Is The Invisible Backbone Of The Cannabis Industry (Op-Ed)
"Continuing down the path of aggressive and over-punitive immigration policies poses a direct threat to the future of this industry." By Ishaq Ali, Latino Cannabis Alliance Behind the sleek tech-adjacent branding and modern marketing of today's cannabis industry lies a far older, unvarnished truth: cannabis is, at its heart, an agricultural product and Latinos are the majority of the agricultural labor, making up a staggering 92 percent of California’s overall agricultural workforce and 77 percent of the U.S. agricultural workforce. The cannabis industry mirrors this demographic reality; Latinos are the largest ethnic group of workers in the legally regulated cannabis sector at 38 percent, a figure that surges to 56–65 percent in cultivation-specific roles.

Marijuana Opponents And Pharma Company File Brief Asking Court To Block Trump’s Hemp CBD Medicare Coverage Plan
A coalition of anti-marijuana groups and a cannabis-focused biopharmaceutical corporation have filed a new brief in their lawsuit challenging the Trump administration's initiative to cover up to $500 worth of hemp-derived products each year for eligible Medicare patients. In May, Judge Trevor N. McFadden dismissed the challenge to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) program that focuses largely on CBD but also allows a certain amount of THC in products. The opponents of the CBD Medicare effort then asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit…

Congresswoman Says Massachusetts Voters Should Reject Anti-Marijuana Ballot Question
A Democratic congresswoman from Massachusetts is urging voters to defeat an initiative on the November ballot that would roll back the state's marijuana legalization law. “Cannabis legalization and regulation is positive for small businesses, local communities and restorative justice," Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) said on Tuesday. "And keeping marijuana legal in Massachusetts is both economic justice and racial justice policy." "With Black, Hispanic, and other marginalized communities disproportionately ravaged by the War on Drugs, legalizing adult-use cannabis in Massachusetts was designed in part to begin addressing that legacy, through social equity programs, economic opportunities and investments in communities harmed by prohibition," she said.

Increase In Marijuana Misuse Diagnoses Among Veterans Is More Complicated Than It Looks, VA Records Reveal (Op-Ed)
"What emerges is not simply a story of rising diagnoses, but a deeper set of concerns about how those diagnoses are defined, applied and ultimately used to shape both policy and perception." By Nate Landau, Veterans Action Council The number of cannabis use disorder (CUD) diagnoses among veterans has risen substantially within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), but newly released VA records obtained via the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) raise questions about what that increase actually means. The data spans a period in which the diagnostic definition of CUD changed significantly, including VA's transition from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-IV to DSM-5, making it difficult to determine how much of the recorded increase reflects actual changes in cannabis use among veterans and how much merely reflects changes in how CUD is defined, identified and coded.

Massachusetts Governor Urges Voters To Keep Marijuana Sales Legal By Rejecting Prohibitionist Ballot Measure
The governor of Massachusetts opposes an initiative on the November ballot that would roll back the state's marijuana legalization law. “I'd vote no," Gov. Maura Healey (D) said in an interview on WCVB-TV's On The Record on Sunday. "We've got to keep recreational marijuana here in Massachusetts." "It's an important industry, the cannabis industry," the governor said. "And I hope the voters keep cannabis." A new poll released last week shows that most Massachusetts voters oppose the ballot measure to roll back marijuana legalization, in line with the governor's views.

There Are ‘No Deaths From Overdose Of Marijuana,’ DEA Confirms In Updated Report
Marijuana can have a number of effects on people who use it but there are no known instances of someone fatally overdosing from consuming cannabis, federal officials say. "No deaths from overdose of marijuana have been reported," the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said in a new update to its "Drugs of Abuse" publication for 2026. That said, the agency is cautioning that cannabis's effects on perception and coordination can cause "serious impairments in learning, associative processes, and psychomotor behavior (driving abilities)" and that long-term use can lead to "physical dependence and withdrawal following discontinuation, as well as psychological addiction or dependence."

Federal Officials Say Marijuana Industry Tax Guidance Will Be A ‘Priority’ For The Next Year
Federal officials say they will prioritize issuing tax-related guidance for marijuana businesses within the next year in light of the Trump administration's move to federally reschedule cannabis. Moving marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) to Schedule III will have large tax implications for cannabis industry operators. That's because an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) code known as 280E, which has prevented them from taking ordinary tax deductions and credits that are available to most businesses, only applies to Schedule I and II substances. The U.S. Department of the Treasury and IRS said in April that they plan to…

New York Dispensaries Have Sold More Than $4 Billion In Recreational Marijuana Since The Market Launched, State Officials Announce
New York's recreational marijuana dispensaries have now sold more than $4 billion worth of legal cannabis products, state officials have announced. The Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) revealed the sales totals at a Cannabis Control Board (CCB) meeting on Thursday. The $4.1 billion worth of adult-use marijuana products since sales began in late 2022 includes almost $1.5 billion so far in 2026 alone. Third quarter sales reached $512.6 million, bringing the total for this year to date to $1.41 billion. The OCM update also noted that a significant share of the state's legal cannabis market is comprised of social and economic equity businesses, and that almost two-thirds (64 percent) of new licenses issued at Thursday's meeting meet that designation.

Recreational Marijuana Would Be Legalized In Florida Under Two Newly Filed Ballot Measures
Florida activists submitted two new proposed marijuana legalization ballot initiatives to state officials this week. The first measure, from a group called Floridians for Marijuana, would allow adults over the age of 21 to legally use cannabis. They could possess up to two ounces of marijuana, including no more than five grams of cannabis concentrates. Existing medical cannabis dispensaries would be able to sell recreational marijuana to adults as of the effective date, which would be six months after approval by voters. New businesses would also be allowed to acquire, cultivate, process, transport and or sell marijuana to adults for personal use.

Virginia Officials Launch Medical Marijuana Patient Survey, Including Questions About How Recreational Legalization Will Impact Them
Virginia regulators are asking patients to complete a "satisfaction survey" about the state's medical marijuana program. The Virginia Cannabis Control Authority (CCA) said the questionnaire is designed to help officials "hear from the people who know Virginia’s medical cannabis program firsthand." The survey includes questions about how often patients use medical marijuana, what types of products they consume and where they obtain it from—including whether they go to retailers in other states. Responses will help CCA have a "better understanding of the patient experience and help identify opportunities to strengthen the program," the agency said, noting that last year more than 114,000 individual patients purchased medical cannabis from a licensed dispensary in Virginia.

Medical marijuana helps people with autism ease their anxiety and depression, according a new study conducted by state officials in Minnesota. The research, which involved 1,800 patients enrolled in the state's medical marijuana program, is "one of the largest on record involving autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and medical cannabis patients," officials said. Of the 88 percent of patients who reported experiencing moderate to severe anxiety upon entering the program, more than half (57 percent) were able to reduce their anxiety by 30 percent or more within four months of beginning medical cannabis use, and 67 percent of those maintained that reduction for an additional four months, according to their answers on self-report surveys.

The new policy, which was sponsored by Sen. Georgia Officials Approve New Rule Allowing Medical Marijuana Delivery By USPS, But Federal Agency Won’t Say If It’ll Participate
Georgia regulators have approved new regulations that will allow medical marijuana to be delivered directly to patients—including via the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and private carriers like FedEx, UPS and DHL. It's not clear, however, if those entities are willing to participate in cannabis commerce. The Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission (GMCC) adopted the reform on Wednesday as part of a broader package of new rules covering issues such as product recalls, tracking, business license applications and research. The most notable change, on delivery via the mail, is being made possible by the Trump administration's move to reclassify medical cannabis, which effectively federally legalizes it, state officials have said.

The document, published on Thursday by the Congressional Psychedelics Advancing Therapies (PATH) Caucus, comes after lawmakers in 2024 issued a request for information (RFI) seeking input from experts about how to best set up a regulatory framework for psychedelic medicines. An analysis of responses to the RFI found "broad consensus among clinicians, researchers, veteran advocates, Tribal leaders, payors, regulators, and patients that could offer safe, equitable, and evidence‑based treatment for a wide array of treatment-resistant conditions," a press release from the caucus says about the new report.

Portland, Oregon City Council Votes To Deprioritize Police Enforcement Against Psychedelics
"People seeking healing should not have to live in fear of unnecessary criminalization." By Jack Gorsline, Psychedelic State(s) of America In a unanimous decision, the Portland, Oregon City Council voted on Wednesday to officially deprioritize law enforcement activities surrounding the personal use, cultivation and non-commercial sharing of naturally occurring psychedelics. The newly-passed ordinance carefully distinguishes between different types of substances and activities, designating non-commercial, naturally occurring psychedelics—including psilocybin mushrooms and ayahuasca—as low-priority targets for the Portland Police Bureau. However, the council included deliberate caveats in the policy. Peyote, a cactus containing the psychoactive compound mescaline, is explicitly excluded from the deprioritization measure.

DEA Judge Pauses Marijuana Rescheduling Hearing As Opponents Highlight Government Report Detailing ‘Gaps’ In Federal Processes
A Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) judge is pausing proceedings in an ongoing hearing on the Trump administration's marijuana rescheduling proposal and asking asking agency officials and other participants to weigh in after a federal watchdog issued a report finding that there are "gaps" in the government's process for evaluating controlled substances. DEA Chief Administrative Law Judge Derek Julius on Tuesday issued a stay in response to a motion from a drug testing industry association and other participants who want a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on drug scheduling to be entered into the record for the hearing, which took testimony in June and July.

Missouri Marijuana Business Workers Claim They Were Fired In Retaliation For Holding A Union Organizing Meeting
"We all are very well aware that it was because we were unionizing." By Rebecca Rivas, Missouri Independent Madison Taylor has spent the past eight days picketing outside her former workplace, Greenlight Dispensary in Springfield. Two weeks ago, Taylor says she and a group of coworkers met outside of work to discuss forming a union. Days later, 12 employees who attended the meeting were fired, she said, after management accused them of consuming marijuana at work. The workers contend the firings were retaliation for their union activity. “My hope, at this moment, is to just continue speaking up for my coworkers’ rights, the industry workers as a whole, and making sure that our community continues to be aware of the predatory practices of this business,” Taylor told The Independent.

Local Officials Advance Measures To Deprioritize Enforcement Against Psychedelics
“As a police chief of any community, it's really important to understand the values of that community... This is something that we want to be on the forefront of.” By Jack Gorsline, Psychedelic State(s) of America The momentum for local psychedelics reform has continued to accelerate into the fall. On September 2, the Pierce County Council in Washington State voted unanimously to pass Resolution R2026-177, throwing its support behind continued research into entheogens and alternative treatment modalities. The passed resolution formally designates entheogen-related activities to be among the county’s lowest law enforcement priorities when no other suspected law violations are present.

The U.S. Now Has Almost 4 Million Registered Medical Marijuana Patients And 35,000 Doctors Approved To Recommend It, New Research Shows
There are nearly 4 million patients registered to use medical marijuana under state laws in the U.S., as well as at least 35,000 doctors and clinicians approved to recommend it and nearly 110,000 caregivers authorized to assist patients in growing and obtaining cannabis products, according to a pair of new studies. The number of Americans who are registered under state medical marijuana programs more than quintupled from about 747,000 in 2016 to approximately 3.9 million in 2024—though patient registration has "flattened since 2022, likely influenced by the growing number of jurisdictions with recreational cannabis laws," one of the papers published in the Annals of Internal Medicine said.

Terminally Ill Patients Could Use Medical Marijuana In Hospitals Under Bill Advancing In Pennsylvania
A Pennsylvania Senate committee has approved a bill to allow terminally ill patients to use medical cannabis in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. The Senate Law & Justice Committee advanced the legislation from Sen. John Kane (D) in a unanimous vote on Tuesday, months after a similar proposal was passed by the full House of Representatives. As approved by the Senate panel, SB 1035 would allow patients who have a prognosis of less than a year left to live to use medical marijuana in hospitals, long-term care nursing homes, hospices and other facilities.

Another Poll Shows Massachusetts Voters Don’t Want To Reverse Marijuana Legalization
The latest in a series of polls ahead of the November elections continues to show that a sizable majority Massachusetts voters oppose a measure on the ballot that would roll back the state's marijuana legalization law. The new survey, published on Tuesday by CommonWealth Beacon and conducted by MassINC Polling Group (MPG), shows that 61 percent of likely voters oppose the initiative—which would repeal laws allowing the regulated commercial sales of recreational cannabis and home cultivation while maintaining legal possession and continuing the medical marijuana system. Just 27 percent of respondents said they favor the anti-cannabis ballot measure, while 11 percent are undecided and 1 percent responded that they would prefer not to state their opinion.

Maryland Law Protecting Veterinarians Who Recommend Medical Marijuana For Animals Takes Effect This Week
A new Maryland law that provides legal protections for veterinarians who recommend medical marijuana for animals will take effect on Thursday. The legislation, which was passed by lawmakers and signed by Gov. Wes Moore (D) will make it so the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners cannot "suspend or revoke a license, reprimand or censure a licensee, or place a licensee on probation solely on the basis of the licensee discussing or recommending the use of cannabis...or a product that contains cannabidiol on an animal for potential therapeutic effect or health supplementation purposes."

Medical Marijuana Improves Symptoms And Quality Of Life For 80% Of Cancer Patients, Study Finds
Medical marijuana is "commonly" used to treat symptoms of cancer such as pain, nausea, anxiety, depression, poor appetite and sleep disturbance, according to a new study—and 80 percent of patients report that it provides relief and improved quality of life. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Kentucky, surveyed 237 adults receiving radiation therapy for cancer at either an urban or a rural oncology practice in Kentucky, which is described in the paper as "a unique geographical area with high endemic use of narcotics." About half of the patients (51 percent) reported they had used marijuana at least once in their lifetimes, with the researchers saying that "self-administration of unprescribed medicinal cannabis use was common across demographic groups and was primarily directed toward symptom management."

Virginia Lawmakers Warned That Increasing Fines For Public Marijuana Use Will Worsen Racial Disparites
“If Black Virginians only make up 19 percent, how is it that they are 47.7 percent of those who are receiving the citations?” By Markus Schmidt, Virginia Mercury Youth advocates are urging Virginia lawmakers to reconsider stiffer penalties for public marijuana use before the state opens its legal adult-use market next summer, warning that the changes could place a disproportionate burden on young people, their families and Black communities. The maximum civil penalty for consuming or offering marijuana in public is set to rise from $25 to $250 on July 1, 2027, the same day retail sales are scheduled to begin.

Pennsylvania GOP Senator Announces New Bill To Regulate Hemp THC Products With Age Limits And Testing Requirements
A Pennsylvania Republican senator is asking colleagues to support a forthcoming bill she plans to introduce to keep hemp THC products legal in the state while adding age limits as well as new requirements for registration, testing and labeling. Sen. Dawn Keefer (R) announced the Pennsylvania Hemp and Cannabinoid Act in a cosponsorship memo on Friday. "The bill gives responsible hemp businesses a clear state framework and keeps intoxicating products out of the hands of children while federal hemp policy remains unsettled," she wrote. While federal hemp policy remains in flux, there is no statewide system for consumable hemp products—with "no Pennsylvania age gate, no uniform testing or labeling standard, and no retail accountability," the senator said.

California Governor Signs Bills On Marijuana Testing, Tracking And Consumer Access To Information
California's governor has signed a pair of bills revising various state marijuana laws related to product testing, tracking, consumer access to information and cannabinoid content. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Sunday gave final approval to AB 1965 from Assemblymember LaShae Sharp-Collins (D), which would specify that all marijuana products for sale in the state are subject to testing or retesting and allow the Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) to obtain products for off-the-shelf laboratory testing. The new law also mandates that cannabis retailers are required to provide a product's certificate of analysis if requested by a consumer.

A federal agency is highlighting how a technique that was created to capture specific compounds from air samples for analysis to help detect bombs after 9/11 is now being used to aid in the development of a marijuana breathalyzer to identify impaired drivers. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cited the cannabis technology effort as part of a new post on how scientific discoveries often have unexpected applications. "Painter Bob Ross taught us that 'happy accidents' can make for beautiful art," the agency said. "Happy accidents also happen in science, when experiments take research in unexpected directions.

Oregon Psilocybin Businesses Celebrate As State Officials Rescind Proposed Fee Hikes
“This was an industry fighting for its survival, and it really came together. The Oregon Health Authority announced Tuesday that it would not adopt proposed rules that would have doubled the annual licensing fees for businesses across the psilocybin supply chain while eliminating discounts for veterans and low-income people.

Pennsylvania Can Legalize Marijuana Next Year If Democrats Flip Three Legislative Seats, House Speaker Says
Pennsylvania is poised to legalize marijuana as soon as next year if Democrats can win a handful of key state legislative races in the November elections, a top lawmaker says. House Speaker Joanna McClinton (D) said at a Black Cannabis Week event on Friday that the state still has "a ways to go" to catch up with its neighbors that have already "moved in the right direction" by enacting marijuana legalization. While McClinton's chamber passed a bill to legalize cannabis last year, it has stalled in the Senate, where Republican have a narrow majority.
