I spoke about No Such Thing as Normal @conwayhall.bsky.social yesterday. With thoughtful questions from people affected by mental health issues, as well as mental health professionals, it was motivating to connect with people over a shared aspiration for better mental healthcare.

Great talk today from @mariekebigg.bsky.social @conwayhall.bsky.social about her book NO SUCH THING AS NORMAL. The greatest risks to our mental health: powerlessness, threat and having our understanding of ourselves dismissed. I’ll be speaking on HER NAME IS ALICE at Conway Hall in the autumn
Two done book covers the first on the left is bright red with the writing in white authors name Marieke Bigg, appears at the top, the main image is a blister packet of pills with five of the six pills pushed out and the title of the book ‘no such thing as normal’ showing through the empty blister holes. the subtitle of the book appears beneath this image ‘disorders diagnoses and the limits of psychiatry’. Below this there is a quote “stimulating and timely. Adroitly skewers psychiatry’s tendency to pathologise behaviours considered “abnormal” Daniel Tammet

On the right is the second book. The cover in white, at the top is the author’s name Caroline Litman. The main image is a picture of a young child wearing grungy clothes, in sunglasses, carrying a bright pink handbag about to get into a car. Across the photo is written the title of the book in bright yellow “her name is Alice.”There is a quote “thoughtful beautiful and incredibly necessary” Sofie Hagan. the subtitle of the book appears at the bottom: my daughter transition and why you must remember her.A couple of paragraphs from Her Name Is Alice

Me too, I say.

This is our mutual wish: for Alice's actions to have been considered, that she made a choice whilst of her own mind, unadulterated by psychoactive substances that made her temporarily insane. If you can agree that suicide, in and of itself, isn't always the result of insanity, by definition. We want her to have had agency. We want to believe that her choice was rational, given the insurmountable barriers being placed in her path, the value, or lack of it, that society seems to place on trans existence.

This idea that Alice got what she wanted, comforts us at first, but our grief deludes us. Death is an escape, that is all.
What she wanted and deserved was to live her life free of judgement and fear, as she knew she needed to.

This line of discussion untaps something deep inside I begin to…

I'm really happy that my book, No Such Thing as Normal, is out in the world. I hope it helps shape the discussions around how we build a more humane mental healthcare system. @profilebooks.bsky.social
