The election held Wednesday 16 December 1903 was Australia's second federal election, and the first to allow women to vote! It was also the first to ask the voter to place a mark in a box, rather than cross out names. This probably contributed to over 30,000 informal (not counted) votes!
How to Vote for the Senate
Electors are reminded that the method of voting has been altered. Instead of striking out the name of the candidate not desired, a cross (X) is made in the square opposite the name of the candidate the elector wishes to vote for. Do not mark out any names. Three candidates must be voted for, otherwise the vote will be informal.
