Ukrainian trade unionist Ivanna Khrapko made it to the TUC conference in Brighton after a tense and frightening journey from Kyiv to the Polish border. Here she is, speaking at a @ukrainesol.bsky.social solidarity meeting. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xduO...

Wonderful evening up on Whitehawk Hill in Brighton yesterday with @mattpope.bsky.social, Ukrainians and friends learning how to see 5000+ years into the past below our feet. Another brilliant gig from Matt on archaeology and Vio on translation 🤩
Dr Matt Pope and Vio Korbina on Whitehawk Hill, Brighton, as the sun sets, 26.8.26. A Kupala Brighton event in which Matt talked about the prehistoric Whitehawk Camp site and how to see its traces on the surface today.

Up and down the coast they raise alarms about 'small boats', but in Brighton ...

Speaking as someone who used to write for a magazine that had a lot of fashion in it, I quite agree! Those perspectives are transferable

Over the past week I’ve gone by train from Brussels to Budapest via Berlin, without having my ticket checked once. DB also maintained 100% record of all trains delayed / cancelled

Anonymity destroyed civility by removing the risk of punishment - and established the new normal in which people lost all shame about using their own names. Sounds like the process is continuing

This sounds like a pretty small subset of the UK’s pre-WW1 building stock, quite a lot of which now turns out to have potential advantages for the new climate. That’s not fetishism, it’s physics. The past is a set of resources to draw on, but a lot of the later C20 past has little to offer.

Going back to schools, my local primary is entirely housed in a model Prussian-style C19 building, the 6th-form college is built around a C19 school, and in between is a former C19 primary now a community hall steadily improving its energy efficiency. Conservation regs really not a problem.

Ah I see; I assumed you were talking about school buildings. The surviving old, solid examples are on the right side of the laws of physics. The 1950s-70s ones around them, not so much.

Dodgy Victorian brickwork? Those buildings are often better suited to heat because they have more mass and less glass than late C20 ones. D

12/15, to my considerable surprise :) Fascinating exercise, but prompted the unsettling thought that bots will increasingly train humans, as the latter scan previous reviews for phrasing to copy.

Do any of them still use the word 'issues' to mean what it always used to mean, before the tech world introduced it as a euphemism for 'problem'?

A healthy note of humility – from Haldane of all people – in the face of the Universe. It is lasting well, and I think it will outlast more recent claims that we've almost got cosmology wrapped up.

Instead of saying if it acts like it's conscious, then it is, how about asking whether LLMs construct homunculus simulators that sit reviewing their activities – hidden behind the screen of the Turing test.

I got an ‘urgent action’ Eurostar email this morning, day of travel, about API. Only solution seemed to be delete EU passport details, enter UK ones. Cheerily waved through Dutch and UK kiosks - but train delayed >30 mins, new system blamed
