Sooo, due to some multi-computer shenanigans I messed up my @beets@fosstodon.org music library. Luckily they decided to use #SQLite, so I could fix hundreds of records with a simple SQL query, all in the comfort of a graphical program that won't commit to the file until I ask it to :) What a […]

Hey @zef@hachyderm.io, what do you use now to automatically update #docker containers? IIRC it was watchtower, but it's discontinued containrrr.dev/watchtower

I keep being surprised by apps that get people interested in #selfhosting. Today wasn't the first time that showing specifically www.grampsweb.org really got a layperson excited about running a private server. Probably because family is much easier to relate to than abstract software

I think I remember seeing a post somewhere on the #fedi about an #ActivityPub server that lets each user choose whether they show a text (Mastodon-like) feed on their profile, or image tiles (Pixelfed-like). But I can't find it now, ¿maybe it was a planned feature?

I just configured a family member's #Android phone to connect with #selfhosting @nextcloud@mastodon.xyz! Thanks to their first-party app and @davx5app@fosstodon.org the phone is independent from the Giant tech company: contacts, calendar, to-do, photo backup, everything works automagically. The […]

#TIL that I can enable "Push to Create" in my @forgejo@floss.social instance. I just backed up many projects from a _Proprietary Service_ (which I might soon lose access to), using a single command for each project. It made me really appreciate the composability of CLI when I could type `git […]

#TIL using #windows API from #zig code, and it's soo much nicer than its original #cpp. Function arguments (that are usually cryptically named integers) can be easily understood just by browsing their type definitions. Pointers are much more specific. Thanks Johnatan Marler for the zigwin32 […]

#TIL to use the `gdb` debugger's command line, without any IDE. While less convenient, I'm glad I had this option when things got a bit unusual. Same thing happened to me with #git and Linux earlier. Now that I think about it, I'm surprised I learned `gdb` CLI so late.

#TIL that applications from @FlatpakApps@fosstodon.org integrate much better than Snap with the rest of my #KDE desktop in #Kubuntu. They appear correctly in the application launcher, keep being pinned to the taskbar through updating, and have better metadata in the Discover app.

I'm really tempted to use the Forester notes approach to writing my thesis. It is a very interesting approach to scientific writing, where (as I understood it) atomic ideas are described separate files that can be linked but also arranged into longer documents. The original is written in #OCaml […]

It's been only four weeks and I really love using mise-en-place by @jdx@fosstodon.org So far I've used it for (chronologically): - switching between #Zig versions, I liked it more than the dedicated `anyzig` - #Python venv activation – it's silly but feels so good, and collaborates with uv - […]

Back online! My ISP was kind enough to give me a _learning opportunity_ in how I can manage access to my homelab. While I can't #self-host that by definition, I can at least have it on a VPS from a local company to resist monopolies :)

Bad `npm` and `make`, no sudo install for you two. And leave my `/usr/local` alone! It was the talk "How to Build Software From Source" from @andrewrk@mastodon.social where someone taught me what build prefix is. I think that's an example of why hanging around #zig language is so beneficial – […]

Recently tried astral.sh/uv tooling for #Python, and I think I'm switching over for the foreseeable future. What made me finally try something else than raw `pip` and `venv` was easy installing of multiple Python versions. I was completing a PR to a library that (admirably) wants to […]

I'm learning to be IDE-independent and appreciate #POSIX more. After a bunch of hunting for one failing file per each rebuild I came up with a magical solution. The incantation is: `find . -name '*.qml' | xargs sed -i 's/\(import [A-Za-z0-9.]*\)[ ]*[0-9.]*/\1/g'` Which translates to "please […]
