There have been unconfirmed but consistent reports of normal people in Des Moines, Iowa, for upwards of 20 years now. But they're covering it up.

saw a cute clip of some nature doc about puffins and over the course of a minute or so, with a growing sense of unease and derealization, placed the voiceover as President Barack Obama

I need to find a Warner Safe Liver Cure comet discovery gold medal
Warner seldom missed an opportunity at self-promotion and in 1883 he built an obser- vatory for Lewis Swift in order to attach a scientific aroma to his pills. Swift was a hardware merchant whose hobby was astronomy -specifically the search for new comets. In nightly vigils over a period of years he had spotted and announced the discovery of four new comets, winning gold medals from a Vienna observatory in the process. Published reports of these prizes had prompted the Rochester press to give him the title of professor and launch a drive for a larger telescope. On hearing of the project Warner had stepped in and built the Warner observatory on East Avenue naming Swift as its director and announcing a new contest in which Swift would award Warner Safe Liver Cure gold medals to the firstAmerican discoverers of new comets. The observatory was in fact the first in the country open to the general public all that was required for admission was a properly labeled cap to a Warner Safe Liver Cure bottle.

Don't worry, in the US that sort of thing isn't chauvinism. That's good old-fashioned patriotism.

LFI has its issues (what party doesn't?) but in comparison to the Democrats it is a great shining light of open-minded universalism and internationalism

A USian Democrat dismissing "progressive" political parties abroad because they're too chauvinistic is beyond laughable.

The Democrats, thankfully, are not weirdly chauvinistic and conspiratorial. They are naturally, normally chauvinistic and conspiratorial. ☺️

Yep, and yeah she was amazing in it. Sam Neil too. Given how much of it rests on their performances a remake seems entirely pointless

Adopting this motto
A turning point came in 1829 when Sam Patch, a noted falls jumper, arrived and announced his last jump of the season to take place at the main falls on Friday. November 13. Sam's motto, "some things can be done as well as others." struck an optimistic note, but his fatal leap over the 96-foot falls that day and his disappearance in the swirling waters below cast a pall over the several thousand onlookers who had gathered from near and far around the rim of the gorge. The next Sabbath morning Josiah Bissell, patron of the Observer and of the 6-day stage line, rose in the Sabbath school of the 3rd Presbyterian Church he had founded to warn: "Those who by their presence encouraged that soul to leap into eternity will be held accountable on the judgment day!"

We have already pulled the trigger... I think we got a good deal but we shall see. I ran the numbers and I think even in a pretty bad scenario where we need to sell in a year or two we're still roughly breaking even with our current rental situation.

It reminds me oddly of people (myself included, sometimes) waiting expectantly for the markets to really "punish" Trump for whatever the cack-handed intervention of the day was.

Yeah I saw that piece... I mean, I would love for all this crap to deflate and disappear. I think there's a strong desire for things we are opposed to to be inherently self-defeating, but I think so few of them are...
