Trying to make time to read for fun as teaching takes over my life. Finally got around to War of the Worlds, and I read two nightmare-inducing middle grade horror novels, the first that I’ve liked as much as or more than Coraline. #booksky #books #bookworkbalance

This month, I took way too long to read a 218 pg MG horror novel, read some picture books for the banned books unit I’m teaching this fall, and surveyed a whole bunch of short horror stories for the horror unit I’m following up with. #booksky

These were the clouds over Lake Tahoe this weekend. Anyone know why they get all Swiss cheesy like that? Actually, they remind me of pizza dough stretched too thin.

Lovely weekend at South Lake Tahoe. There were bears going in and out of people’s campsites the whole time, but they were chill. My dog didn’t even bark at them. #tahoe #camping

My first attempt at drawing with oil pastels. I'm pretty pleased with how the light blue and the white blended to make that wing. #drawyourstressaway #drawing #artsky #butterfly #oilpastels #nature

Oil pastel drawing of a blue morph butterfly resting on a tree trunk. Half of its light blue wing is visible from behind the trunk. Feathery leaves from the tree form a green background to compliment the blue of the butterfly.

Turnspits: An extinct dog breed formerly trained to assist chefs by running on a wheel that turned a spit. Described as having “a suspicious, unhappy look about them.” I think I can see why. #dogs #doghistory #extinctbreeds #history

Sketch of the extinct turnspit dog. Small breed with long body, short crooked legs and a tail that curls up. Snot and ears resemble a terrier’s. Dark fur on top with a white belly and chest.

Print of a turnspit dog at work in an 18th century kitchen. The wheel that the dog runs on is suspended from a beam on the ceiling. A system of ropes connects the wheel to the fireplace where the meat turns on a spit.

Never a good sign when the mechanic asks you to go into the garage to look at something. It’s never, “I just wanted to show you what a beautiful fuel pump you have here!” It’s always, “Your fuel pump has Crohn’s disease!”

Getting a new scanner seemed like a good occasion to reupload all the paintings that I made last year. Make art! It's good for you! #artsky #painting #raccoons #skunks #mothman

A racoon witch walks through a snowy forest in a fog. It wears a pointed witch hat and a scarf and holds a glowing twig wand. A shadowy figure resembling a giant moth with a pair of long, human legs appears to stalk the racoon through the woods.

A racoon on a witch hat stands on a stone in a grassy field at night. Storm clouds loom overhead as the racoon casts a bright light with its wand, kicking up a gale.

A warrior skunk in an oleander cape stands in a lush forest at night, staring up at a silhouetted owl in the canopy. Two more owls watch the skunk from the branches behind him. The skunk had a bushy tail and wields a spear several feet longer than himself.

One major problem with studying the ancient writings of America is that none of them are named like “the mythology of Oaxaca” or anything that makes sense. They get named “The Paris Codex,” “The Codex Nuttall,” & “The Dresden Codex” Names come from current collections and not sources.

Compare the ministry of Jesus to that of these new MAGA preachers. Where in the gospels does Jesus preach deportation, homophobia, clawing back money set aside for the poor? Jesus would not recognize his own religion today.

I’m no longer a Christian, but I grew up in a church that imagined Jesus as a figure of radical love and opened its doors to everyone. This article is a nice reminder that this vision of #Christianity still exists in the world.

The narrative for the last year has been that Democrats still don't get why they lost in 2024. If there's a lesson from last night, it's that Republicans still don't get why they won. The people asked for cheaper groceries, Trump focused on immigration and culture wars. That's why he's losing.

Democrats had a big night. Here are 5 takeaways from the 2025 elections

Democrats had a good night, winning major races including governor's races in Virginia and New Jersey and a redistricting ballot measure in California, while also confronting the future of the party.

One of those books I'll remember liking more than I did. I could talk for hours about the world of Paradys, its history and monsters, its gender nonconforming characters, but I often felt detached from the protagonists, making parts of the book feel like a homework assignment. #books #booksky

Columbus' voyage wasn't just about exploration, it was about enriching the Spanish Crown at all costs. When he realized that he hadn't discovered a route to Asia, he resorted to enslaving and brutalizing the Taino people to make a profit. If we must memorialize him, let's not gloss over his legacy.

President Trump said "left-wing radicals" have tried to tarnish Columbus' legacy, and the proclamation is a way to preserve it. Some experts say it's a way to erase the heritage of Native Americans.
