Today is #Gibraltar National Day! Putting aside the many layers of politics around that contested piece of land, I'm lucky enough to have #GibraltarianStatus through my father, and so here in York we are celebrating with #Rosto and #Calentita, two culinary delights which are Pure Gib.

Law is a kind of 'computer program' for the functions of a state. Reading @doctorow.pluralistic.net's account of how Mitch Glazier "snuck a clause into must-pass legislation", it struck me that in tech terms this would be a 'Supply Chain Attack' on the law. pluralistic.net/2026/09/02/s...

Ugh. Gross. #eventim #seetickets I don't know when it became acceptable to describe a musical gig/concert as 'product' but there is a special hell for those people who made it so.

Also the #NHSEngland 'Canonical' Data Model is now 6 months out of date, when the repo says it will be updated monthly from changes to a (presumably) fast-moving FDP data model. The very fact they are updating periodically from somewhere else *proves* the CDM repo is not the 'source of truth'.

osr.statisticsauthority.gov.uk/news/nhs-eng... Worth a read. It is a sad testament to the culture at NHS England that they would deliberately mislead the public and the profession by claiming causal relationships between FDP and 'benefits' that may not exist.

#NHSEngland seem to think they can fluff the figures on #FDP adoption and nobody will notice. Vague notions like "Trust X are signed up for FDP" is not evidence of *benefit* from #FDP. But FDP comms, driven by politics not science, doesn't care www.medact.org/2026/resourc... @medact.bsky.social

NHS England's Digital Data and Technology Committee has posted two reports of its meetings (March 2026 and December 2025), *neither of which* mention open source as a cybersecurity risk. Dec 2025 www.england.nhs.uk/long-read/di... March 2025 www.england.nhs.uk/long-read/bo...
Cyber and resilience
1. Two papers were reviewed covering the NHS England Resilience Programme and the Cyber Accelerator. The committee noted significant overlap between the two, with insufficient alignment between the teams. Strategic and policy decisions will be consolidated within the Cyber Accelerator; the Resilience Programme has been refocused on its original scope — mission critical systems and completing minimum controls for each. A mapping grid will be produced to enable progress monitoring.

2. The committee has three substantive concerns which require attention:

2.1 First, the Cyber Accelerator Programme spans a wide range of actions but lacks clarity on prioritisation. The team has been asked to reframe the programme using an urgent/important matrix and present a clear plan for those items satisfying both criteria.

2.2 Second, progress on the Board’s request for a national business continuity exercise following a severe cyber-attack is slow. The Committee felt that we must test and plan for major failure scenarios as they relate to cyber, with a focus on business operations and decision‑making resilience rather than technical restoration.

2.3 Third, and most significantly, the Voluntary Redundancy (VR) programme represents a material and currently unmitigated risk. Scarce specialist capacity is being drawn away from critical cyber and resilience work, and this constraint is not yet resolved. The committee felt that the approach to VR may be a symptom of a wider root cause that we have a system which needs to be digital but doesn’t know how we grow and nurture the technology workforce and make it much more part of the DNA of the organisation.

A quick read but one I would say is required reading in 2026: @simonwillison.net's predictions for the future of AI programming: simonwillison.net/2026/Jan/8/l... I completely agree, and I think it'll drive down the costs of building software while driving up quality AND demand.
The more time I spend on AI-assisted programming the less afraid I am for my job, because it turns out building software—especially at the rate it’s now possible to build—still requires enormous skill, experience and depth of understanding.

"AI boosts A&E EFFICIENCY", apparently - is this verifiable with any measure of efficiency that would be meaningful to affected patients, or any quality measure? Or is it AI fluff being pumped out by a government that has nothing to offer the NHS apart from chaotic ICBs and a "10 Year Not A Plan"

The 10 Year Health Plan working group: data and technology mentions Federated Data Platform only once: to describe it as a 'learning point'. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6939ae... Does this mean it's not now part of the 10 Year 'Vision'?

The authors of the paper conclude that Postmaster David Cameron's request to appeal should *not* have been blocked. 100% I agree - and further *when we have proprietary code that can result in someone's conviction then that code needs to be published in its entirety, as part of legal disclosure*.

Had an alarming presentation from NHS England today - up till now their plans for the "All-New Electronic Red Book" were described in the #TenYearNotAPlan in two words (in two places): "My Children" + sprinkling of buzzwords including the word "AI" next to "new rash", which is fucking TERRIFYING.

To add context: When one registers a Trademark anywhere in the world, it is published so that anyone with an objection can object if appropriate. It's absolutely rife with opportunist fraud - when they publish your details numerous companies will send emails/mail demanding cash *FOR NOTHING*

Fucking pathetic. Fraud is rife in the immediate purview of the UK's Intellectual Property Office and the best they can do when you report it TO THE GOVERNMENT is to ask *me the citizen* to report it AGAIN to Action Fraud. *I don't work for you*, IPO. Get on the case and put fraudsters in jail.

The next paragraph states: "By contrast, 15 years ago, the UK spent less on healthcare as a share of government expenditure and less per capita but public satisfaction with the NHS was at a record high." FROM THE SAME GRAPH we can see that this was RIGHT AFTER record Labour NHS spending.

Here's a non-X.com still showing the key bit. I sincerely hope that senior officials at NHS England are shifting uncomforatbly in their seats watching this. If they aren't resisting this, they are complicit. And on the wrong side of history.

Absoultely damning Public Accounts Committee report on DHSC and NHS England. publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5901/cm... Staggeringly, NHSE have responded by denial, distraction, and refusal to listen. (Toxic) Culture eats Strategy for breakfast. www.england.nhs.uk/2025/01/nhs-...
The new government sees health as one of its key missions and will present a 10-year plan for the NHS in the first half of 2025. It has set out three big shifts that it wants to see: from hospital to community-based care; from analogue to digital; and from treating ill health to its prevention. These transformations are essential to the NHS’s recovery and future sustainability but saying them is not the same as achieving them. We are concerned about the lack of fresh thinking and decisive action we heard from DHSC and NHSE. The scale of government’s ambitions is great, but senior officials do not seem to have ideas, or the drive, to match the level of change required, despite this being precisely the moment where such thinking is vital.
