You declare state in your view like strict locals, read it in plain Ruby, and write it from HTML attributes. Updates happen at the slot level, so only the changed values are updated. No JavaScript framework and no new file format needed.

The answer to "what does this enable?" is ReActionView v0.6, which introduces LiveView-like, fine-grained reactivity for Rails.

Today is a big day for Herb! It's built into Rails 8.2 by default for all HTML+ERB views. My talk at #RailsWorld in Austin today answered three questions: What is Herb? What ships in Rails 8.2? And what does this enable? Herb v0.11 and ReActionView v0.6 released alongside it.

yrby is getting to a really strong place. I’m running it in production, and I’ve expanded quite a bit beyond my meager early ambitions I want it to be the first-class answer for realtime collaboration in Ruby/rails, without having to reach for node or any other tool

Also, notice how `link_to` doesn't get declared as a strict local! Herb parses the embedded Ruby with Prism and knows the Action View Helpers, so it can tell your variables apart from method calls. 🌿

Been prototyping a new "Extract to Partial" Code Action for the Herb Language Server 🌿 Since it knows which variables your selected text uses, it can create the partial, define strict locals, rewrite all references, and replace the selected code with the proper render call ✨

I don't mind reading code written by agents, but I hate reading their PR descriptions. If I can't make myself read a PR description from Claude, I won't expect others to. Now when delivering PRs, I may not have written the code by hand, but I'll certainly write the description.
