I felt kinda limited by only 9, I wish I could have squeezed a Bayonetta or a Thomas Was Alone in there, but here’s what I went with (also I do not recommend most people play SoS, seriously, don’t)
A 3x3 grid of video game covers for a “My 9 Games: The 9 Games The Shaped Who I Am)” graphic. The games going from left to right starting with the top row are Mass Effect 2, Dragon Quest VIII, Resident Evil 4, Kingdom Hearts 2, Medal of Honor: Frontline, Monster Hunter: World, Saya no Uta/Song of Saya, Coffee Talk, and Dark Souls

It’s giving
Webcomic where an angry woman is driving a car with the aligator in the passenger seat. She says “I swear this place has the craziest drivers” “Why, what happened?” the alligator asks. “The guy we just passed was doing 103 mph in a 55” she responds. “Ah, I see.” the alligator says. Then three panels focus on his face as he slowly comes to a realization, with the words “Just passed” and “103 mph in a 55”. The last panel is outside the car with the alligator saying “Let Me Out Let Me Out LET ME OUT” In the bottom left corner is the instagram link to shaveyoureyebrowscomic

Grandia 3. It being the first one I played (and not having much internet access at the time) meant I wasn’t comparing it to its predecessors and I had a blast, it and DQ8 are games I borrowed from my library and were foundational in getting me into RPGs as much as I am.

Ah, I think I may have found the source of the issue…
An excerpt from Believe Media’s wikipedia page, subsection “Copyright controversy”:

Believe has been accused of copyright trolling, particularly on YouTube, where it has been alleged to engage in claiming copyright for works that are either copyright free or that they do not own the rights to. The company was the subject of a New York federal lawsuit alleging that they were behind large scale, willful copyright infringement. Concerning the copyright and its management, Believe submits content under its license and available on YouTube through the Content ID algorithm, YouTube's automatic-identification system that detects copyright-protected content on the platform. If the system finds a match, a Content ID claim is applied to the matching content. Despite the previous lawsuit, Believe Music has persisted in making copyright claims even on music very clearly in the public domain and on songs by independent artists.

El Paso, Elsewhere has been described to me as “What if Max Payne but with vampires and werewolves?” I’ll admit the only reason I haven’t booted this one up is to save it for stream. Alas, the people repeatedly vote otherwise 😔

Much to @markusgustav.bsky.social ‘s chagrin, I still need to play Homeworld. I’m mediocre at best with rts games, so a full 3D space one seems daunting. But I’ve heard the story is excellent!

Don’t have anything combat ready, but in Dad’s retirement he sometimes comes back from trips with weapons. They’re for display, but the sentiment is sweet.

1. Tomb Raider Chronicles An anthology of sorts, this game takes four mini adventures of Lara. But some of the stories, especially the last one, feel like rushed, near indecipherable messes with lots of bugs to boot. Knowing that it was rushed out to buy time for AoD makes things click into place.
The cover for Tomb Raider Chronicles. Lara Croft stares at the camera from inside a storm cloud, holding a gun.

2. The Callisto Protocol I hadn’t heard good things about this one, but I wanted to give it a try. And it’s not the worst thing in the world, but it’s very tedious. The combat never feels super engaging or tactical, and you will quickly learn to loathe the grub monsters in crates.

3. Ghostrunner 2 This one hurt. While the boss fights are a bit better, the game trades out its tight linear focus for breadth and big open maps and it’s weaker for that decision. It’s also much buggier than its predecessor, causing one stream to end on a softlock that required a level restart.
The cover for ghostrunner 2, with the protagonist Jack holding a sword ready facing the viewer against a black background with a yellow futuristic ui and lights on top of it.

4. Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness The last of the original run of Tomb Raider games. It’s ambitious, trying a lot of new things. Few of them are for the better. A hub area that gets abandoned within the opening hours, a stamina system, a stealth system, all of them half baked.
The cover for Tomb Raider The Angel of Darkness. Lara Croft is in the center, wreathed in white flame

5. Alchemist’s Castle This one’s as low as it is because I almost feel bad for putting it on here. The game’s $1, made based off a game jam, and is not very long. But its concept of a metroidvania where you need to unlock everything, including jumping and attacking, proved frustrating.
The cover for Alchemist’s Castle, with the titular tower looming in the distance of a mountain range and the protagonist in the foreground under the title.

1. Metaphor ReFantazio Surprised? This is the longest game I’ve streamed to date, and it was agonizing to not be able to keep going off stream. A robust class system, inspired art style, and harrowing story of wanting to make the world better easily make this my #1 pick.
The cover for Metaphor ReFantzaio, with the Traveling Boy protagonist in the center, surrounded by a procession of allies following him. In the background above are various monsters and the antagonist Louis.

2. Fear The Spotlight Did you know Blumhouse made a games division? Their debut game is excellent. A bite sized throwback to early Playstation horror, despite some grisly subject matter the game manages to be shockingly wholesome and sweet while also being well designed.

3. Labyrinth of The Demon King For a throwback to early playstation horror with a medieval Japanese horror focus, LotDK is oozing (sometimes literally) with atmosphere, supported by a Kings Field skeleton. It’s grimy, scratchy, and unnerving, which is exactly what it wants to be.
The cover of Labyrinth of the Demon King, stylized as japanese art piece depicting the creatures and punishments of the Buddhist Hell of Naraka

4. Trepang ² Ya kids like F.E.A.R.? Crysis? S.C.P.? Trepang ²’s got a little bit of all of them (mostly F.E.A.R.), where you’re given slow-mo, invisibility, and a highly customizable array of weapons to unleash high octane violence against hapless goons and bizarre anomalies.
The cover for Trepang ², showing a group of soldiers in tactical goggles and a winged monster in the background approaching while a hand holding a pistol decloaks from invisibility to face them.

5. Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle Season One. The itch dot io backlog keeps on giving! This goofy and charming Ace Attorney-alike is packed full of minigames and loving anime shoutouts, all while bouncing around a memorable cast of characters. Also the devs are based 👍

1. Them and Us This one started so well. I was actually quite enjoying it as it seemed like a love letter to classic resident evil. But after about a third of the way through, it became clear the game didn’t know *why* those mechanics work, and increasingly overstayed its welcome.

2. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League I really tried to give this one a chance. Gotham Knights (which did not make this list) felt like a good game trying to claw its way out of a rough one. This one feels like a bunch of competing mechanics all wrestling each other for dominance.
The cover to Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League where the title is stylized like an X with each of the four protagonists (Deadshot, King Shark, Harley Quinn, and Captain Boomerang) each looking down from the center of the screen from their quadrant of the space between the X

3. Legendary An older game I remember from my childhood. Mythological creatures invading modern day sounds like a fun, schlocky time. But the game’s extremely rough around the edges, capped off by a gamebreaking bug that makes reaching the final encounter impossible without modding the game.
The cover for Legendary where the protagonist fires his gun at an approaching Griffon, Minotaur, and Werewolf in the streets of New York while the decapitated head of the statue of liberty lies in the street in the background.

4. The Subject I had high hopes for this, considering the same creator made The Mortuary Assistant. Individual parts could work, a maze, puzzles, a timer before you die that you can refresh, and a stalking monster. But all combined make a frustrating experience rather than a scary one.
The cover for The Subject, showing an up prisoner in a futuristic inmate suit and harness with a bag over their head.

5. Propagation: Paradise Hotel A VR survival horror game with zombies sounds like a winning combo, and it could be if done right. Unfortunately, the game’s undying zombies only get back up when in swiping distance, making some damage feel unearned. It also ends abruptly, feeling unfinished.
The cover for Propagation Paradise Hotel, with the protagonist standing on the stairs of a dark hotel lobby with a flashlight.

1. Signalis I only wish I’d gotten to this one sooner. It has old school survival horror sensibilities and uses them well, while telling a creepy and heartbreaking eldritch horror/love story/tragedy. The analog, soviet-ish aesthetics in the visuals and audio really seal the unsettling vibe.
Cover of Signalis, showing an up close shot of the protagonist Elster’s face mostly in shadow, with bright red light blinding the background behind her and being reflected in her eyes.

2. My Friendly Neighborhood It was a tough call between this and The Bunker. It’s odd to see someone make a love letter to both Sesame Street and Resident Evil at the same time but it somehow works. It’s not a scary game, but it nails survival horror design while having a big heart.
The cover to my friendly neighborhood, with one of the puppets from the show in the middle with letters and numbers floating in the air.

3. Coffee Talk Set in modern urban fantasy Seattle, you’ll be chatting and brewing for elves, orks, and succubi while they deal with their all too human problems. It’s an incredibly charming game with a gorgeous soundtrack. Just be wary streaming it on Twitch as the OST seems to attract ©️ flags.

4. Guardians of the Galaxy This one managed to slide in just under the finish line. The combat is serviceable until it opens up later, but the main appeal is the surprising amount of heart and charm, to where the conversations are the main appeal. Just be warned: this game is BUGGY.

5. Sagebrush A surprise hit I stumbled on while going through my itch dot io library during Halloween, this lean walking sim about a girl returning to the site of a cult she was once lured into is simple but it works, and takes the time to show how someone’s life is affected afterwards.
