BEWARE OF SCAMS! Scammers are impersonating me and targeting creators. My email will always end in @starlingliterary.com. I am no longer with ABLA, and I do not conduct business from a Gmail address. If something sounds too good to be true or includes fees, it’s probably a scam. Be safe!

BEWARE OF SCAMS! Legitimate Starling emails will ALWAYS end in @starlingliterary.com. If you receive emails from ABLA or gmail address, it is NOT from us. Be sure to check that editor or publisher emails are also coming from verifiable email addresses. The scammers are relentless. Be safe!

It really depends on the author's goals. Do they prefer an agent that lives in the same country and the same time zone (which makes scheduling calls and meetings easier)? Do they wish to publish in a particular country more than another? I represent creators all over the world. Hope this helps!

As I want to know your goals, what's in the works, which projects are most important to you, what you might want to do someday, so I can discern whether or not I would be the right fit for you ongoing. You deserve the best agent for your career, not just the project at hand. Hope that helps!
010
Jennifer March Soloway @marchsoloway.bsky.social · 29/01/2026
Good question. I suggest you focus the query on the project you are sharing with the agent. However, at the end of your query letter, you can mention that you have other projects in the works that you'd be happy to share. When I have a call with a prospective client, I always ask as well 1/?

Jennifer March Soloway @marchsoloway.bsky.social · 29/01/2026
Likely, the answer is yes, but I won't know until I see it, and who knows, I might fall in love with your maximalist prose. If you think I could be a good fit, try me. Best of luck to you!

Jennifer March Soloway @marchsoloway.bsky.social · 29/01/2026
Or the market? For better or worse, books are competing with social media and other short forms, and it seems everyone's attention is fragmented. I have seen a trend toward shorter books, including shorter chapters, for shorter reading sessions. Does that trend include minimalist prose? 8/?

Jennifer March Soloway @marchsoloway.bsky.social · 29/01/2026
Now, maximalist prose. As you can tell, I am extremely long-winded (verbose, loquacious, an abuser of run-on sentences with multiple conjunctions and em-dashes), so I don't mind maximalism, as long as it is engaging and masterfully done. So yes, I'm open to it, but are readers? 7/?

Every once in a while, I do encounter a terrific, polished manuscript with a dynamite prologue, followed by a fabulous book, and in such cases I fall in love with both and offer rep right away! It's old advice, but to break the rule, you must master it first. Hope that helps! 6/?

Or when I read a confusing prologue but then fall in love with the chapter (and the rest of the book), I might suggest to the author to let the prologue go, that I don't think it's necessary. Then the author can decide if they like my note/vision. If so, great! If not, I'm not the right fit. 5/?

Jennifer March Soloway @marchsoloway.bsky.social · 29/01/2026
When I read an exciting prologue followed by a first chapter that's much slower, I find myself wishing I could continue reading the story introduced in the prologue. In such cases, I usually pass and let the author know I'd love to see a revision. 4/?

Ah, I love this question! To prologue or not to prologue, that is the question. (More on maximalist prose in a moment.) Prologues are tricky. When they work well, a prologue can be masterful! But in early drafts, when a writer hasn't quite figured out the story, a prologue can either be... 1/?

Oh, wow, that's a big team full of twins and duos! Would you ever want to do individual projects?

Jennifer March Soloway @marchsoloway.bsky.social · 29/01/2026
I suggest you first talk through these questions to know where each other stands. Once you know, you can decide which option is the best fit for you. Does that make sense? Hope that helps. Good luck!

Additionally, if you are team, how do you wish to split the earnings? Ex., sometimes an artist will receive a larger advance, to enable them live/eat while creating the art, but then the two creators will share the royalties evenly. 4/?

If you are an author-illustrator team, I suggest you first take a step back and talk about your goals. Do you only want to create books as a team? Would you ever want to take on projects individually? Ex: would the illustrator want to illustrate other texts? 1/?

my newest novel, YOU’RE NO BETTER—a teen thriller about messy trans kids and serial killers—has an official summary! this book is a rough one, and it tackles a lot of ugliness, but I love it so much and can’t wait to share it 💕
A white and pink graphic reading “YOURE NO BETTER: Official summary,” with broken glass in the background. Black text on a white background, reading:

“Bestselling author Andrew Joseph White returns with another horrific YA thriller: a profound portrait of a struggling teen trying to convince the world—and himself—that he’s better than the serial killer who raised him.

Morgan Slaughter, a seventeen-year-old trans boy with autism, put his serial killer father in prison years ago. Despite that, everyone thinks Morgan will grow up to be just like his dad: including his volatile mother, the documentary crew following their family, and maybe himself.

Desperately, Morgan latches onto his father’s final victim—the only one who was never identified—hoping that if he unravels the mystery, he’ll finally prove he’s better than the man who hurt him. But this puts Morgan in the crosshairs of classmate Felicity Keating, who knows the truth about Morgan’s childhood—that he wasn’t just a witness to his father’s brutality, he was an accomplice. And if he doesn’t let them help with his investigation? They’ll tell everyone.

Forced to confront his past, Morgan’s ugly but carefully controlled world unravels. The film crew is manipulative. His mother’s temper spirals into malice, then violence. And Morgan and Felicity may be more tightly intertwined than either of them can stomach…

You’re No Better is a gritty and unapologetic coming-of-age suspense about teens who grew up surrounded by cruelty and are clawing their way to adulthood the only way they know how.”

"Like Jane, Jennifer got married in Las Vegas by Elvis, but she's never robbed a bank." (You can decide if that's true or not.) Use that final line to showcase the tone of the project--funny, sad, serious, scary, etc.--and your writing. Best of luck! #Querying #Writing #StarlingLit

#QueryTip (and #SubmissionTip): A creator #bio is a few sentences about you. If you have education pertinent to your writing, include it. If not, don't (and don't worry.) Same is true for experience or awards--and if not, it's okay. End with a line that connects you to your project, like... 1/2

Great question. If I read a query and am interested in the project, I will look at the creator's social media to get a sense of how they present themself to the world. Are they kind? Are they supportive of other creators? Do I think we'd get along? That's a long way to say yes, I do. 😉

Jennifer March Soloway @marchsoloway.bsky.social · 22/01/2026
I love books that play with form. If the dialogue is great and the banter fun, wonderful! If not, then you might want to add some narrative. That's probably not helpful. In other words, with me, nothing is off the table. If it works, I'll like it. If not, I'll suggest you revise. Good luck!
