Scrap NI and roll it into income tax given NI isn’t really collected today for the purposes it was fifty plus years ago. Get to the position where you are taxed on income whether working or not and an additional wealth tax (CGT) where needed

This is gonna sound piss poor but I think the SP being taxable is probably due to the DWP IT system and an inability to fix it (suspect it’s an old system creaking at the seams and serving many such as HRMC) and to decouple SP from other taxable private pension income isn’t possible. It’s a theory 🤷‍♂️

To start though I’d say every pensioner should be paid the same with Pension Credits added above the £12.5K universal pension (means tested of course). Then work out what tax changes you need to cover that and social care. As Nike would say “just do it” and stop talking about it politicians

If you raise the threshold from £12.5K to £15K for a pensioner on state only then that does not help them. It would also remove tax from the system so you’d have less money for services such as social care. I don’t disagree though that they should be raised on the lower levels today.

That’s where I’m at as well. I think the timing is to coincide with the bills second reading in the Lords and the values irrelevant other than Reform trying to be smart and saying we’ve levelled the playing field on donations despite knowing they’ll have to give it back and defaults to ‘victims’.
