Just an ordinary middle-aged English born Scot with an interest in politics, trying to make sense of a world that doesn't. Any opinions expressed are my own, and I try to be balanced and thoughtful, though I occasionally have been known to falter.

This should be the time to call out the US as a Russian ally, and an enemy to nearly everybody else. Boycott the G20, and do everything possible to support Ukraine. Sadly, I know the world doesn’t work on ethics, moral standards or principles any more, so all we can do is label it. Betrayal it is

Looks like they had to edit the video from the bit where the car started nosediving. One button, four thrusters, and someone mistakenly thought they’d set the balance on the stereo to the rear speakers…

That line “the Britain they all fought for” is such utter BS. Just right wing window dressing to try to excuse prejudice. This long afterwards, the war has very little to do with that prejudice. The Daily Mail, however……

So, for the last 80 years we were supposed to remain stuck in 1945, as they’d all fought for a white, pure England, with tweeds and morris men? After people who actually fought alongside all nationalities, against a common foe, discovered they could co-exist with other cultures and beliefs?

Well done you. Too many still cannot give up the ‘benefits’ that they personally/professionally gain from being there, when likes and followers are such lauded modern yardsticks of ‘success’ and ‘popularity’. The people who still call it Twitter are stuck in a pre-Musk nostalgic state of denial.

Great article, and this IS exactly how I, and clearly others, view America now. Every aspect damning, and I don't feel a great deal of confidence that it will all get reversed, either. It looks like a nation built on sand, with a Constitution written on the beach, and the tide finally came in.

All he's ever got is to play the victim. Just a Trump lite excuse for a man who mostly appeals to the type of people who might become councillors for him and then get exposed for what they are. I do so hope his political star is of the falling variety.

That's a pretty damning indictment of Steven Edginton's driving at the end of his post, though, isn't it?

Always the victim card. He is not responsible for anything, is he? Just the world out to get him; mind you, hopefully the whole "establishment" shtick is wearing so thin that even the bozos supporting him might begin to see through it.

Good to see someone acknowledging that the downsides of X are far greater than the career, financial or “but, my many followers” benefits. You also didn’t call it Twitter, which makes a nice change to the nostalgists who just can’t let it go.

It’s interesting how they are all using the words “successful interference”, and not “any interference”. Then you start wondering what their definition of “successful” is, since they got the result they wanted…..

It's a bank note, not a friggin literary masterpiece. People are mostly interested in the number on it, and what that number gets you in return often falls considerably short of inspiring. Have they never noticed what we've had on coins? Probably forgotten they exist...

If you couldn’t care less, why bring up the Russia indyref story at all? Why the follow up comment? I’m not even knocking Scottish indepedence. I’m questioning the credibility and motivation of a 2014 Tass press release in the Herald, in the context of Russian misinformation warfare tactics.

Marchie @marchie56.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
It seems counter-intuitive to Russian aims; they’ve done all they can to weaken nations. Surely they’d see any break up of the UK as a positive (even if Scots would too)? It was Tass. One wonders if it was just misinformation, purely designed to create an easy bit of chaos, division and resentment

It’s amazing how people still come up surprised. Whatever the Russians have on him, or if it’s just a bromance, he is a full blown Russian ally dancing to the Kremlin’s tune. And a whole country can’t do SFA to stop him. A Constitution written on a paper towel, that he decided to p*** all over

There we go. He makes the US go full Russian ally, and if gas prices fall as a result will the US applaud or vilify the decision? Once upon a time no-one would even consider the possibility of such a question. And what the US people think of it won’t matter a jot, because nobody will stop him.

Of course you’re right. But Hogsbreath has already suggested it. His master will have OK’d it. And we’re stil waiting for the GOP and MAGALand to denounce it for what it is. Who thinks they will? The US needs life support; its ‘leadership’ keeps choosing death support. Literally, in this case.

Yep, and long may they continue to split their vote between the two, as both parties try to desperately keep them. If Restore can take a portion of the addled sector, even better! For reference, I’m not far off being a pensioner myself.

I find it ironic (notwithstanding how non-PC it is to write this) that the single largest cost to the UK welfare system is pensioners, and here they go suggesting giving a massive boost to the assets of ….pensioners. Who are the most likely to vote Tory? Oh, yes. Silly me.

This for me is the most worrying aspect. Orange granpa is going to pop his clogs on the sooner side of future, but how many torch bearers will there be to continue on this trajectory? There is not wholesale rejection of it now; once they get a sane person up front, how many will fall in with it?

Your final sentence captures the sentiment precisely; it is equally as accurate a description of Hegseth, and every enabler that surrounds him. But nobody will do anything. We keep hearing they all hate him - GOP Senators & Congress, Penatagon, Military - but still an 80 yo bozo holds sway.

Piece by painful piece, America sinks into the very swamp they seemed to believe Trump would drag them out of. This isn’t just about Trump though; the MAGA cult still has its acolytes. Ironically, there is already a very public death playing out before us - the death of a nation’s soul.

So Trumpian - take no responsibility, accept no blame, become the ‘victim’ of any consequences - and just like the US, a section of our society still supports them. Home for the hopeless, brainless and shameless (and a fair number of ‘…ists’)

So they’ve gone for ‘inspired by Thatcher’ as the counter to Burnham’s ‘destroyed by Thatcher’. The right does seem intent on taking everything away, and promising all our hopes will somehow just rise from the void, but I guess they still cannot desecrate the Altar of Brexit…

Jeez, just cones across as a petulant, childish grumpy little scrote. Say it in your most whiney voice, and you still can't reach the depths of it. And still the people around him haven't reached the Ides of March (it seems they'd rather stab themselves in the back than turn on him. For now.)

This American fascination/abhorrence thing with ‘socialism’ is truly weird. Nobody seems to understand what Socialism actually is, but latch on McCarthy style to “it’s the boogeyman!” Yet direct, state sponsored Authoritarianism - hey, bring it on, and I’ll take your imaginary money. So Dumb.

I think the “Englishness” reference is wholly deliberate. Brexit was an English independence vote, and the Scots, Irish and Welsh don’t have the same identity crisis. Certainly in Scotland, you are not defined by your ancestry. If you love the country and the people, it matters not.

Or she is trying to give herself (and Yusuf) legitimacy to be in a ‘party’ where if you are not white and don’t speak in an accent clearly identifiable as English you really don’t belong, but you REALLY want the political exposure ever since you lost your power and prominence with theTories.

I do understand the dislike of the rise of AI generated music, but I wonder if it's like the rise of synth and electro pop back in the day. People said it was the end of music as we knew it, but it wasn't. There will always be a place for real people with real voices, playing real instruments.

All so very neat - wrap up his ‘superior’ foresight with small boats and a demand for information from authority. It’s all so effing formulaic. (Look at me) Index + throw ***t at wall + (establishment factor x riled up base) = hope it sticks value. So very neat, so very tiresome.

As an observer from across the pond, whilst our political system is far from ideal at least our choice is not binary. Having only two parties where polarisation is baked in, in an environment where collaboration is shunned by one of them, was always a recipe for disaster, and now you have one.

Another song, this one voicing my frustration with the general political landscape, tinged with a smidgen of hope. I have to hang onto the belief that it's not all inevitable. (It's in a musical style I didn't see coming until l wrote it, but is somewhat at odds with my age 😀)
