2000 Great Songs #1479: Last Light. Matt Pond PA infuse a splash of added energy into their unfailingly amiable jangle pop, crafting another catchy, slightly melancholy track that seems perfectly designed for a 1980s mixtape circa 2000s.

2000 Great Songs #1478: The Cry Of Eugene. Before Keith Emerson pulled The Nice in a proggier direction as a precursor to ELP, they had some interesting psychedelic moments, like this trippy, headphone-friendly bit of Nuggets-worthy strangeness.

2000 Great Songs #1476: Boys Who R@pe (Should All Be Destroyed). They're in the headlines; hell, they're in the White House & Pentagon. Fortunately, there's a Raveonettes track, fizzed-out 60s girl group sugar to sweeten a tough hang.

2000 Great Songs #1475: Big Brown Eyes. Another shoulda-been-all-over-the-radio single from the dB's, and arguably the precise moment when the universe transitioned from late 70s skinny-tie power pop into 80s college radio jangle pop.

Fantastic essay! I had a similar experience. I discovered Badfinger around the same time (hearing Baby Blue on the radio), and in the early 80s you could only find their records in overpriced original vinyl at the used record store (in my case near Chicago). Delighted when Ryko finally issued CDs.

Agree on all counts. And yeah, I think if one cuts the Yoko tracks and adds in the leftovers from Milk & Honey, Double Fantasy is his most consistent LP--making his murder all the more tragic.

Technically those were credited to the Plastic Ono Band (and released before the Beatles were officially over, so I tend to think of this one as really kicking off his solo career), but, yeah, I guess we can call it his third.
