mRNA cancer vaccines are showing real promise in trials, solar and wind have overtaken coal globally, Switzerland just rejected a far right referendum, polls in the US show that republicans are going to be blown out in the midterm, I saw Ian Mackaye eat a cupcake at the Sex Pistols show last night.

It was really weird. He wasn’t trying to talk to me about Slint but rather at me. He seems to live his day to day life like he’s always being interviewed for a rock documentary.

I saw a guy blocking a whole sidewalk with five bikes he just parked in the middle of where people were walking. I confronted him and he turned around and it was Dave Grohl and he didn’t say anything about the bikes he just saw my Slint shirt and started talking about Spiderland like he was in a doc

Bee Gees episode sounds cool but if you’re still debating have you considered Silver Apples? They headlined NYC’s moon landing event in Central Park which ties in nicely with Space Oddity’s theme and their early electronic sound foreshadows future Bowie besties Kraftwerk.

Taking breaks? Eating? Hardly the authentic Trout Mask Replica experience

Well I’ve shown my ignorance then. I assumed the audience was all obsessives. Well now that I know who the average listener I too look forward to seeing their reaction to Frank Sidebottom and a ton of other artists.

I guess I just have to go off anecdotal experience but Sidebottom seems to have more cultural penetration, not huge but definitely known among weirdos. “Frank” is a well liked cult film and occasion random tributes to him will pop up like one of the pumpkins in Over The Garden Wall having his face.

As an American that subscribes to your Patreon I would imagine the Venn diagram of Americans that subscribe to your Patreon and Americans familiar with Frank Sidebottom is already close to a circle.

I once saw, at the Afropunk Festival in Brooklyn, on a stage sandwiched between banners that said “No Racism, No Sexism, No Transphobia, etc.”, a crowd boo a speaker that came to talk about trans rights between sets. Half of every crowd seems oblivious to what the music they like stands for.

Do you ever wish you had knowledge or more modern music or are you at peace with this?

Would you say there are any 90s albums that come close? Any that don’t suffer from bloat? Like I personally couldn’t imagine what you would cut from something like Loveless or Spiderland. Not trying to antagonize or invalidate your opinion just curious what you think comes closest.

Pixar's early creatives (Lasseter, Stanton, Docter, Ranft, etc.) all had backgrounds in traditional animation. Stanton and Docter are still at Pixar and were heavily involved in TS5 and I do wonder if they have some regret for essentially killing an art form they loved.

The Devo mention makes me hope for a Devo episode so we get to hear you say “egg punk”.

Despite all the success in America I’ve had conversations with several friends that I consider at least decently knowledgeable about music and pop culture that think of them as one hit wonders for ”American Woman”. Strange legacy for a band with multiple number ones.

Primer is great. Don’t read writer/director/composer/lead actor Shane Carruth’s wikipedia page though if you’d like to keep enjoying the film though.

Every modern action movie since 2011 owes a huge debt The Raid so I feel like that has to bump the year up a bit. (It didn’t get a wide release until 2012 though.)

Truly sad news. All their albums are very good but his guitar playing really set Schlagenheim above the others in my opinion.

They're definitely not Nazis. All three of BCNRs album are great but be sure to check out Ants From Up There. And if you're interested in checking out more Windmill stuff the best known other bands from that scene are probably black midi, Shame, and Squid. All very good and worth checking out.

Well I guess you take a small amount of solace that at least one UK Christmas song has, in a very minor way, made a presence in the U.S. as, from the sounds of it, dozens of U.S. Christmas songs are invading the U.K.

Curious if during your trips to the US you ever heard ”I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday” played anywhere. For most of my life I had never heard it played in public but ever since Black Mirror got added to U.S. Netflix around 2015ish I’ll hear it once or twice a year.

I was at a Frank Oz q&a last year and a very nervous woman asked how he felt about Miss Piggy inspiring Chappell Roan's fashion and Frank Oz said he hadn't heard of Chappell Roan which caused the woman to insist he had heard of her and then she sang "Hot To Go" which greatly upset Frank Oz.

But… thats what makes the podcast unlike anything else. I hope this doesn’t stop us from getting future entries like a Black Flag episode about Norman Lear, a Kraftwerk episode about modernist architecture, and a Slint episode about the history of limestone mining.

Even artists that used it satirically in the way Blazing Saddles did have enough sense to not use it today. I saw Jello Biafra, a man who made a career of pushing people’s buttons, a few years back and he had removed it from “Holiday In Cambodia”.

Would Cap’n Jazz’s “Shmap'n Shmazz” fall within the time frame you’re looking for? Released June 95 and at 31 minutes can hardly be considered bloated. Also laid the groundwork for Midwest Emo which should appeal to anyone that was 16 in the mid 90s.
