That and having space for it. In my twenties we managed to fit tons of people around the table in the tiny flats we lived in, but now we're older people expect outrageous things like proper seats. Some of us are still in the tiny flats, so long journey plus not quite enough space = not very tempting

They had an audio guide that couldn't be paused, so it forced a specific pace and honestly it was *really* annoying. If someone was in the way of the bit it was talking about you just missed it, and it went slightly too fast. I can imagine if they were assuming that flow rate, it wouldn't hold here

The more I go to other national art galleries, the more I realise how incredibly well run and curated the NG is

There is a sad lack of duology showings at all!

I think it might be like all the cyclists behaving badly arguments. Some people are gonna be arseholes and it doesn't matter whether they're a humanities person/on a bike or a scientist/in a car. But that there are also structural issues around it and just eurgh, why can't people just not be arses

So I will say, as someone in a possibly similar situation who went the other way, that a lot of the humanities people sadly made CP Snow's Two Cultures look like it was still *extremely* current with how utterly disdainful they were of all the scientists

I still quote from it an alarming amount, but now loads of people don't realise it's a quote 😭

The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

Do you mean the one where he's played by (the extremely hot) Connor Swindells? Where they just gave him bad hair?

Smarty uses Three's network but is usually (quite a lot) cheaper. They've also got pretty decent Europe roaming and are just not annoying

My car is 22 years old, cost £670 and is ULEZ compliant. I appreciate some carers may have equipment that might be difficult to fit in a Fiat Panda, but I just don't buy the 'people can't afford a ULEZ compliant car' but can afford London car insurance.

I mean for London specifically there's also the whole issue of the boroughs versus the mayor, for example with the whole pedestrianisation of Oxford Street saga which should obviously happen but kept getting blocked by Westminster Borough Council

Please please do this! The National Gallery's free tours occasionally touch on this for specific works and it's always fascinating

Have you heard the audiobooks where Tim Curry really goes for it as Mogget?

my Tim Curry story, which I think i've told a few times. I interviewed him when I was in college--he was starring in "Three Musketeers." Asked him something like how did he approach a villain role & he said he liked to give directors 3 options: "standard," "over-the-top" and "top over-the-top"

Ah, did you also get the 'General Studies doesn't really count, so it's only 4 really' delivered in a very smarmy tone, then have to explain that none of them were actually general studies? Good times

You are in the middle of one of the busiest art museums in Europe. You need to stop to check your phone. Do you A) Stop in a doorway B) Stop in the middle of a staircase C) Both of the above one after the other and ignore any cries of 'excuse me' (tried in multiple languages)

We have bike traffic jams in London on some cycle lanes at peak commuter time. Apparently they're still not busy enough because they're not rammed mid-morning on a rainy Tuesday 🤷‍♀️

In any Dutch city you're never that far away from an Albert Heijn salad which is tasty, about €6, filling and actually has vegetables in it. But for some reason British supermarket salads are all sad things which barely count as one of your five a day or assume you're on a starvation diet.

Park Road pools in Crouch End and the one next to Clissold Park both used to do this, but I don't know if they still do

My favourite example of this genre was when someone had *clearly* come home to find their partner in bed with someone else and all the neighbours were leaning out the windows trying to work out which house it was from before deciding what side they should be on

And all Belgians speak about 4 languages, so picking the one that lets the Americans understand how much they're getting laughed at is on brand

The team itself communicates in English because it would be quite controversial to pick Flemish over French or vice versa as the team language. (Got told this by a Belgian dude on a Eurostar who was lovely until he realised the next match was Belgium v England and decreed we couldn't talk anymore)

my theory is that it proves that the US just isn't a football nation at heart - sure you can be happy with a bit of shithousery, or with one of your players getting away with something they shouldn't have got away with, but something like *this* is just on a different level entirely
