One calf can offer hope for an entire species. This #BongoBonus, we’re sharing a young mountain bongo captured on a camera trap in the Aberdares. MEP is proud to support MBP’s efforts to protect these critically endangered bongos and their forest habitat.

What if elephants didn’t have to navigate fences and boundaries in the first place? At our coexistence farm, MEP has discovered five crops that elephants don’t like to eat and planted with open pathways for them to cross. No fences. No boundaries. This is coexistence.

The environment sustains us in more ways than we often realize. From the wildlife and wild spaces we share to the water, forests and landscapes we depend on, protecting our environment means protecting our future. This Mazingira Day, caring for our environment is a responsibility we all share.

What makes seven hours of helicopter flight worth it? The answer is simple: helping one of the Maasai Mara’s most endangered animals. Seven hours in the air and collaboration with partners on the ground made it possible to find her and treat a life-threatening infection.

Conservation is people work too. Ahead of World Mental Health Day, MEP rangers and staff came together to pause, reflect and have honest conversations about mental wellbeing. Because caring for wildlife also means caring for the people behind the work.

Sometimes, a few minutes can make all the difference. After a community report of an agitated elephant bull in a settlement area, MEP’s ranger team and Mara North Rangers responded quickly, guiding him safely back into Mara North Conservancy.

Drones are giving MEP rangers a clearer view of elephants across Nyekweri Forest. For Fitz and his herd of 70, aerial imagery helps the team monitor elephants spread across the forest and community farms, check for injuries and keep an eye on Fitz’s condition and collar, all from a safe distance.

A bull elephant was carrying a spear deep in his side, putting his life at risk. MEP rangers joined Mara Conservancy rangers and vet Dr. Ashif Hafiz to treat him. Thankfully, he recovered from anesthesia, got back on his feet and walked away. We’ll keep monitoring his recovery.

Guess who came to visit? A collar alert told us Edwin was close to MEP HQ. MEP’s Research team found him travelling with two other bulls. His collar data, combined with field observations, helps us understand elephant movements as they navigate the landscape in search of food and water.

When a calf was spotted in a herd near a community settlement, MEP’s rangers had to balance a swift response with a careful approach. Their experience helped guide the herd safely away, creating space for both elephants and the community to coexist safely.

Meet Individual #54 At around 40 to 45 years old, she has been sighted 15 times across the Mara. The distinctive curve and shape of her tusks make her easy for our Long-Term Monitoring team to identify, while her frequent associations with different family members reveal her highly social nature.
