David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 02/10/2026So not to be pedantic but there are actually a lot of skilled carpenters, cabinet makers, and other woodworkers already in Hawaii. Why do you need to bring over new ppl from elsewhere to get something done? 000
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 29/09/2026There's some really neat ones in there. Good design inspiration for students. The Locations facet is a good way to get at the non traditional maps. 002

David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Was just looking at hard copy of this map yesterday. Nice texture on the print. We have a watercolor world map from the same cartographer as well. Same style and texture. Really nice work. 000
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Yeah, I thought it was still called that even in Pro, but I think this is all now just "effects" on the Symbol panel. 010
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 24/09/2026#gischat Cartographic Representations were an ArcMap thing only, is that right? What took over from that in Pro? What does Esri call the functions that do on-the-fly symbology changes like line offsets and layered symbol styles? 210

David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 16/09/2026I mean it’s not a small error. At first I thought they somehow mashed up a Mercator Greenland into the Natural Earth projection, then I saw the caption! 110

David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Since you're working in Illustrator anyway could you export your vectors and rasters separately and re-compile? Rasters exported separate from vectors lets you export them as JPGs at any resolution and keeps your vector exports clean too. 100
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 09/09/2026FWIW, I never use pixels for anything unless its just a single image or I'm working from something like PS. I don't feel like QGIS works behaves well in pixel dimensions and/or small layout sizes. 110
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Oh yeah, that's got to be it. I've been incrementally shrinking my layout from 900x900 to 600x600 then 180x180. The in-layout render always looks the same, but when I hit 180 pixels you can see the export raster is much more pixelated. You prob have to re do the layout. 110
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Its probably going to be some interaction between the export engine and layout size, screen size, or original image size - or even rendering settings in QGIS. 110
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 09/09/2026I'm trying to recreate this with a small project but all my PDF exports show the same rester as what I see in screen in QGIS regardless of the changes I make to export dpi. I wonder if you are having a general memory issue? How big is the PDF export? 110
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 09/09/2026There is also an export resolution setting in the layout properties, but no idea if that affects PDF exports. You might also try oversizing the layout (larger size same aspect ratio) to get a higher res image in the PDF, then resize in Adobe later. 010

David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Equal Earth is more accurate for area representation, but I feel like its still very non-conformal (Africa is very elongated) How far off is Robinson in area? Its got a more natural/conformal look to the shapes of land masses and at first glance seems closer to Equal Earth for area than Mercator. 110

David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 31/08/2026TLDR... John Snow wasn’t the cartographer, he didn’t invent GIS, the map didn’t lead to the discovery of the outbreak source. This is once of geography's oldest and least accurate mythologies. What's too bad is the real story is still very interesting and informative! 140
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 27/08/2026Every time he does this he erodes the value intrinsic in the American identity. He makes himself a petty weak fool, he erases history, and diminishes the identity of a nation to nothing more than a crude branding mark that will inevitably be undone when he's dead and gone. 010
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 26/08/2026Rainbow colors are an objectively terrible way to relate "more or less" as a data range to symbology. Besides mismatched color connotations, when converted to BW you can clearly see the false high value peaks in the ramp. 020

David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 12/08/2026That's part of the repeating style I'm seeing. There's also a hard to define graphic "richness" to them. In photographic terms I'd say they are too well balanced in exposure, oversaturated, and have a strong high-dynamic-range quality. You see the same in photorealistic AI images and videos. 020
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 12/08/2026Discovering that many of the compromise projections push Australia and New Zealand off the page in lower R corner while projs like Miller don't. Patterson projection is a possible middle ground, but I'll prob end up with Miller anyway. 000
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 12/08/2026One of the things I want to study in the #365daysofmaps project are those maps that stand out as having an obvious AI 'style' and see what defines that to me. Not all of the examples look the same but a LOT of them seem to have the same base aesthetic despite the prompts. 120
David Medeiros @mapbliss.bsky.social · 12/08/2026...I dislike most AI generated map design I've seen so far and this project hasn't changed that opinion much. But I have learned a lot about the process and discovered that AI interactive maps may be pretty useful. And AI data discovery and prep may as well. Give them time to finish. 120
