#MedievalSky Happy #HugAMedievalistDay! We celebrate with one of my favourite scenes in books of hours, the Visitation. This one comes from the Hours of Antoine de Crèvecœur, Leeds, University of Leeds Library, Brotherton Collection MS 4, fol. 60v (detail). #LeedsManuscripts #BooksOfHours

Medieval manuscript illumination of the Visitation, depicting Mary and Elizabeth embracing. Both have halos, with Mary in blue and Elizabeth in red. They stand on a path near a house with arched windows, where a small animal (dog?) is visible. The scene is framed by a decorated border with floral patterns and a small marginal figure.

What better day to get this new account going than the #HappyNewYear? Copied 600 years ago, the miniatures for the calendar page for January are aptly selected: #Janus, the Roman god of beginnings & endings and the water carrier for Aquarius.
