I recorded a short video of the next version of Epilogue, featuring a new book calendar you can put on your blog. Submitting this to Apple and Google today or tomorrow. www.manton.org/2026/10/01/i-recorde…

OpenAI’s Dots product is pretty interesting. Soon after I configured my dot and gave it a name, it suggested something it could help with. It already had a connection to GitHub and memory of all the things ChatGPT knew about my work.

Worked on Epilogue this weekend, adding a new layout for the iPad. This also gets it a step closer to iPhone Duo support.

Got my print copy of The Fires of December. Love the secondary ink color. I started the ebook already and I’m about halfway through it.

Rail and oil in Three Rivers, Texas.

Another update on the new theme editor: I added a “…” context menu with a “Show Locations” item. This will show where a template is coming from, e.g. your custom theme or a plug-in. Still can be confusing, but getting better.

Choke Canyon State Park. Kind of a rough night camping. Pretty much had the place to myself, though, except rabbits and deer.

Screenshot of the redesigned theme editor for Micro.blog going live now. It’s better in pretty much every way. Nicer folder and file list, brand new syntax highlighting editor with support for Hugo and HTML, and other improvements.

Another shot of Austin, a little later in the morning from the Lamar pedestrian bridge. Love this city and don’t actually go downtown often enough.

Morning in Austin. From the bridge looking east.

One of my concerns with tabs going on the right is discoverability. Turns out you can tap and hold on icons to show the label for each tab. Here's a quick video of how this looks in Epilogue, which is the first app I'm experimenting with.

We’re rolling out a series of improvements for podcasts in Micro.blog. The first was last month with a better web playback UI. Now there’s also a Listen Later feature that builds on bookmarking. Coming soon: a new version of Wavelength with audio narration for posts and more.

I’ve been quietly improving the saved links feature in Micro.blog, available to Premium subscribers. Nice way to find what you’ve linked to on your blog. This screenshot of the Mac app shows the new web page thumbnail previews for quick scanning.

Excited that it’s The Fires of December release day for backers. I’ve loaded up the ePub to read later.

Started reading Alchemised by SenLinYu and was surprised that it felt pretty dark, because for some reason I thought it was YA. Nope, just regular adult fantasy. I tend to read books that sound interesting while ignoring most of the back-cover blurb. 📚

For the last week in Codex, I’ve been using a single pinned thread for each app instead of deciding when to start new threads. Basically just let Codex compact its context whenever it needs to. Seems to work well.
Screenshot showing pinned items includes Micro.blog and Inkwell platforms for web, mobile, and Mac, along with Epilogue.

Added a new page in Micro.blog on the web today to highlight The New York Times best sellers. We usually avoid popularity contests, but this one feels right, like a shelf you’d see in a bookstore. I want to add more collections later, like nominees for the Booker Prize, Hugo Awards, and others.

Micro.blog was founded on the idea that more people should have their own domain name, and yet the UI to actually do that has been clunky for years. I’m working on improving that, starting today with a little “Edit Domain” button to help walk people through the change.
Screenshot shows options for registering a new domain name with Micro.blog or using an existing domain name by editing DNS records.

Today I updated the Micro.blog web interface with better links and icons in the timeline, and a new context menu for editing your own posts or muting a conversation. There are a lot of related design fixes too. Just a better design and more room for us to build new things on.

Relocated to work at the Laura Bush library. The view is just as beautiful as I remember when I was visiting 30 libraries in Austin. Can’t believe that was 10 years ago.

I’m still amazed that AI prompts like this work. We’ve barely scratched the surface of what is possible.

Something I’ve been asking myself lately: what new things are possible when AI costs drop? I’ve been improving Micro.blog’s Logs page, and this morning updated it to rewrite confusing Hugo messages in more friendly language. It even localizes if your account isn’t set to English.
Screenshot of a message from Hugo indicates that the site could not build due to a missing tag shortcode template.

Continuing to improve the Logs page in Micro.blog. I think the color for different tasks helps. Still a little nerdy, but it’s a very useful page to understand what Micro.blog is doing.

Did not finish: Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao. I loved the idea and it starts well, but 25% in the writing didn’t quite work for me. Decided to put it down, there’s too much else to read. 📚

Seems like we might be settling in for a 5% Apple tax across the board, globally, based on the US court and EU compromise. I don’t love it. Linking to external payments should give Apple 0% and nothing more. Related, I saw this scare sheet yesterday while managing my account in Disney+.
A warning message from the App Store informs users that they are about to leave the app to visit an external website operated by Disney and that transactions made there will not involve Apple.

Computer History in ChatGPT is blowing my mind. It’s basically a note-taker for what I’m working on. Here’s a screenshot of my work so far this morning. I’m still fine-tuning what apps should be included… No chat, and will likely exclude some specific websites too.
