The stalking archetype
The androgyne is stalking through the land. Men feel its shadow on them and relent, cease to cling to their harsh, cramped male roles and persuasions. Women it awakens to neat, icily defined new spaces, to precisely coordinated planes, into which they start calmly picking their way.
Within a metaphysical perspective the encounter with the androgyne has always been unavoidable. When the mind soars above names and forms, it must come to the point where sexual divisions are also bypassed On their way to total transcendence, mystics go through the hallucinatory experience of divine love and marriage, in which they become the ravished spouses of the godhead.
The androgyne is the symbol of supreme identity in most religious systems. It stands for the level of non-manifested being, the source of manifestation, which corresponds numerically to zero, the most dynamic
and puzzling of numbers, the sum of both aspects of Oneness: +1 - 1 = 0.
Zero symbolizes androgyny as the starting point of numeration, divisibility and multiplicability.
In Hindu metaphysics the polarity of being, represented by Siva and Sakti, on a higher level becomes sheer unity and blends in the androgyne Ardhanarisvara. In the Satapatha Brahmana gods and demons engage in a contest. The god Indra says 'One' in the masculine form (eka), and the demons answer 'One' in the feminine (eka). Indra says Two', masculine dual (dvau), and they answer in the feminine dual (dve). When five comes up pañca), the devils are silenced. Five is above gender; it contains both odd and even (3 + 2), divisiveness and contrast; with five the four quarters centre (4 + 1) on the heart. Five symbolizes the androgyne as an achievement, as a return from polarity to unity (see also p. 69).

This was bad. This was so bad it made my brain hurt. It was sort of entertaining and yet extremely painful. It wasn't nearly gay enough. There are five more Brotherhood movies and I'm probably gonna watch them all.
