Where did Delhi's July dust come from? A 120-hour HYSPLIT analysis and CAMS dust forecasts show air reaching Delhi travelled from the west via southern Pakistan. Long-range desert dust contributed to the PM10 spike, adding to local pollution. Read more: open.substack.com/pub/indiaair...

Rising heat drives India’s summer power demand 🔵 Peak demand hit 256 GW on April 25 during the highest cooling demand day 🔵 Both day and night demand rise sharply with heat, especially night demand 🟢 RE+storage can shift curtailed daytime solar energy into evening peak hours

Ground-level ozone pollution is rising across India this summer. From May 1-13, 60 out of 260 Indian cities exceeded the daily maximum ozone limit (100 µg/m3) at least once. Rajasthan recorded the highest number of cities with ozone exceedances.

India’s solar curtailment in April was ≈1.7x Jan-Mar combined. Battery storage can reduce curtailment by shifting excess midday solar to evening peak demand, but transmission, demand flexibility, and thermal fleet operations also need improvement.

India hit a new power demand high: 251 GW at 3:49 PM on 24 April. Of total generation at that time: 🟢 Non-fossil: 33% (22% solar, 3% wind, 5% hydro, 3% nuclear) 🔴 Thermal: 67% RE is already powering peak daytime demand. With storage + grid flexibility, more night demand can shift to non-fossil too

Delhi needs a multi-pollutant approach with time-bound targets. In March 2026, ozone was a prominent pollutant, alongside NO2 and CO. This recurring trend shows a clear gap: policy remains PM-focused, while gaseous pollutants are increasingly driving air quality, especially beyond winter.

India’s clean energy transition is strong, but unchecked coal clouds the road ahead. 🎯India’s #500GW non-fossil target could make #coal power peak before 2030. ⚠️But unchecked coal expansion could make the transition slower 🔋Grid flexibility, #storage & transmission will decide the pace ahead.

Despite being mandated in 2015, 92% of #coal plants in India still lack #FGDs to cut #SO2 emissions. Now studies by NEERI, NIAS & IIT Delhi are cited to weaken SO₂ norms. we have compiled a note outlining the common arguments along with scientific responses that counter them.

Despite ongoing debate over the need for FGDs in India, the scientific evidence is clear: enforcing SO₂ norms in coal power plants (CPP) is non-negotiable. Power sector drives up to 12% of PM2.5 and transboundary impact is 16% in urban areas. Only 8% CPP have FGDs and 380 of 537 CPP exceed limits.
