39 years ago the world found a hole in the sky and agreed to close it. Over 99% of ozone-depleting chemicals phased out, and last year's Antarctic hole was the 5th 2 weeks ago the UN said we'll cross 1.5°C anyway. The Montreal Protocol is proof the second one is still ours to shape.

Turns out, AI's main climate impact isn't the enormous energy demand of the data centers that fuel it. It's what AI is doing for oil and gas. New peer-reviewed research: those gains could enable 3.3 to 13.3x more carbon pollution than data centers produce today.

AI helps fossil fuel companies find deposits, plan extraction, and pull more out of the ground. The net effect: half a billion to nearly 2 BILLION tons of additional CO2 a year. Clean energy would need productivity gains 4 to 5x more than oil and gas to cancel that out. That's not happening.
