Picked up Art of Computer Programming. Worth it for an old dog? Intro so far is pretty compelling and reaffirming that I'm not insane or clueless at least.

There are federations that function, and they are more than just mastodon. The internet was not designed to be centralized, what we built was co-opted. Re-claim your common space. opensource.com/article/23/3/tour-th… Fediverse - Federation that communicates with real standards

ShotSpotter can “misclassify fireworks or sounds from cars as gunshots, and that company employees can alter evidence; during a 2016 police shooting trial in Rochester, a ShotSpotter employee admitted to reclassifying sound from a helicopter to a bullet at the request of police.”

The best summary of what's going on with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes I have seen so far is in this Phil Jupitus comic. www.instagram.com/p/CuvHrS5M7zN/?ig…
A comic in which Mark Ruffalo explains what's happening in the current SAG and WGA strikes while a buffalo swears.

If we’re offering some grace to Bluesky, we could also offer it to people who are understandably upset at being dehumanized by bigoted scum on a new platform that got their hopes up. I mean I assume there’s that much grace to to around.

my biggest issues with ATproto are as follows 1. Standard proliferation, ActivityPub already exists and can be extended. 2. Bsky is a for profit entity made by the same people and come from the same places/cultures as the other networks. Funded by them too. 3. Profit + Commons = not your commons

You fluidly moved from system to system because they didn't have your data, you did. There were ofc some practical reasons for centralization at one point for some usecases. At this stage of our technical development, they make less and less sense every day.

of personal control through underpowered personal moderation tooling. meanwhile, the real internet (web1 ill call it) put the client in your hands and the data on a standard protocol backed by the dev/eng orgs of the world.

realizing the kind of capture that could be had (similar to what AOL and CompuServe had) they built up thier proprietary systems with specific anti-consumer designs such as forced remote data storage for NPI/PII this allows them to control everything you see and here while creating a façade...

manitcor @manitcor.bsky.social · 16/07/2023
its just the nature of the domain mixed the proprietary protocol implementations. Social networks like most apps sit 2 or 3 layers above HTTP(s) often just using a patchwork protocol they that gets wrapped into the public API via a gateway.

domains, through marketing domain names were made a sole way of accessing systems. this was pushed to the people as "the way the internet is used". We need them yes (TLS forces it), but they don't need to be the land-staked gateways they are now. it's perception that lets the gatekeepers reign.

protocols can distribute themselves if we make them do so, im ok with large instances, they wont kill fedi, they will just kill themselves. eventually people will learn. this is fallout from marketing around DNS.
110
manitcor @manitcor.bsky.social · 16/07/2023
the problem on fedi is the mentality of being on "big instances" which is just as corrosive as piling onto any single domain as we have seen the last 20 years. every single instance with tons of users just has all the same problems. Communication is local first, thats how this scales.

why accept any of it, none of us need to be bending knee to valley kids to communicate. this is ridiculous.

My hottest take about free speech: the ACLU was on the right side of Skokie, but the subsequent 40 years of high school pedagogy about the case have been an unmitigated disaster, creating a generation of people who seriously think that being nice to Nazis is not on legally required but a moral good.

I've been reading Mansik for years, I still don't agree with the moderation theorem, it mainly applies to super large sites that IMO are an aberration when it comes to social systems. they aren't supposed to get to a million+ users in a single system. what we are experiencing is corp capture.

its almost like apologizing is not that hard, its almost like ego and pride prevents people from doing it for petty reasons when they know they messed up and adults know that and get angry about other adults not acting thier age. Esp when those adults are running a large system of any kind.

There are three kinds of people on bsky right now: 1: "we will burn this place to the ground" 2: "what racism? I just logged on" 3. "and how does that make you better than a nazi, if you hate nazis?" Be 1. If you're 2, catch up and be 1. Don't be 3 for fuck's sake.

how is this any different than a thread filled with people that blocked eachother i keep hearing people bring up stuff like this but its so often something that already happens and at scale, just look at any twitter drama thread. and the aftermath of whines about blocks. bsky only has broken DiD

For bsky to succeed it needs to get large enough to be the place you come to share information. Right now, unfortunately, it is the place you come for vibes and drama, and that is a dead end.
