!["Displaying shades of Margaret Atwood and David Mitchell, Kalivas! is a work of patient worldbuilding [...] Aiding this effect is Mamatas’s easy but compelling storytelling, a style enlivened by occasional bouts of carnivalesque energy and all culminating in an arresting act of textual – indeed, theatrical – intercession. This closing act is the true transmutation of the Shakespearian original into something genuinely new (though still somehow recognisable). Its bawdy humour and metafictional, quasi-philosophical, and structural left-turn may be the most divisive (and, likely most discussed) part of the book for readers, but it is in some ways the most audacious and creative (one barely resists saying spectacular) element of an already audacious and creative novel. Mischievousness exudes from this section in the finest spirit of Fantastika but, more than that, it gives pointed meaning to Mamatas’s prior meditations on immortality."](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:mdpd7kfnf4cryagsau3y5lrk/bafkreicqxnrcfehwhw73t7lw2mvcvlwazgdy5drxfb2qb3jdagtdmh7sey)
