The movie asked the audience to empathize with Penny. She's not irresponsible like other movies make women look or that she's deserving of consequences. Instead, we see her choices are constrained & that her opportunities, livelihood, & autonomy are at risk.

One thing i love about this movie was it affirmed that, yes if this girl didn't get this abortion her life would be over.. Especially for a movie that came out in '87. It treats the abortion storyline as a serious reality rather than a moral punishment plot.
