Not exactly the same, but it's similar to my investment in Marathon. Halo is always brought up in conversation about Marathon, always being pointed out as the precursor, but idgaf ftmp. Marathon is its own thing and I enjoy it more than what I've played of Halo: CE.

The new co-op roguelite Serious Sam game looks like it'll be decently enjoyable, but the playable Sams are mostly lame as hell. Only one, maybe two, have any history in the actual series. Missed opportunity to have retro Sam, cartoony Sam, and realistic Sam all standing together.
