I've been meaning to post about this from the FM trip, but I wound up doing a lot of reading about it so this post got a little delayed lol but one of the really neat things I saw around the Nicollet Mall were these very detailed covers of Minnesota's state flora/fauna and grains of the Midwest!

we're finally getting some rain (first time since early July)!!! after getting a little drizzle, I got my bf to pull over so I could snap a pic of this combo inlet that's hiding behind a little curb island. they even had a Spanish 'no dumping' marker (since the grates do the job in English lol)!

quick point of clarification (granted, this is just my opinion since I haven't seen clear standards on the matter): these sorts of grates have a lot of names (drive-over, rolled curb, valley, concave, mountable, etc.) that seem to be used fairly interchangeably, but I think we can have some nuance!

typically, a grate with a bend in it is a bad thing since they're meant to sit flush with the ground. but sometimes, like when you have something like a rolled street curb or a ditch, a drive-over valley grate inlet is just what you need! I took this pic outside the FM hotel!

a concave inlet with a slight fold down its middle, allowing it to align perfectly with the slight bend of the gutter running along a rolled curb. the grate had no foundry marks, but it's similar in design to Neenah Foundry concave grates, a foundry that is very common around Minneapolis!

re: flow arrows, they literally make these vaned grates with arrows to indicate proper orientation BECAUSE IT MATTERS curved vane/tilted bar grates are typically quite hydraulically efficient compared to conventional grates, but placing them in the wrong direction TANK their efficiency

still haunted by this jank curb-grate inlet I saw on the way to a bar in Uptown... not only did they orient the Type-L grates so that the vanes are perpendicular to the gutter flow direction, half of them are pointing AWAY from the inlet (see the flow arrows on the grates) 😭

ever wonder what the underside of an inlet cover looks like? here's one I saw on a walk near White Rock Lake! this side gives a better view of the hairpin spring locking mechanism used to try and keep the covers in place. the top side looks a bit like this third pic from a similar model in Denton!
