This is my last carving of 2025. I call it Floricious (a floral feast for the eyes). It is just over 26 inches high, I look forward to carving more in next year. All the best to everyone in 2026. #handmade #woodcarving #naturespirit #flowerhead #cottonwoodbark #art #femalewoodspirit

It has been a while since I posted one of my woodspirit carvings. This multi-faced flowerhead is titled Metamorphosis (transformation). It was carved in 2024 and is 24.25 inches tall and 7.35 inches at its widest. I hope you enjoy it. #handmade #woodcarving #art #woodspirit #flowerhead #folkart

Cottonwood bark is always full of surprises and inspiration.

I only use hand tools to make my carvings. No electronic devices.

I don't use paint to augment my carvings. I prefer shadows.

I can stare at a piece of cottonwood bark for hours or over several days before it finally speaks to me.

I have been carving woodspirits in Cottonwood Bark for about 8 years. I feel that they symbolically connect the human spirit with the natural world. Traditionally, woodspirits bring good luck and safe passage through life. My first carving of 2025 is also one of the tallest I've done at 27 inches.

Natural cottonwood bark prior to carving.

I name all my woodspirits. This is Lauma, woodland goddess, spirit of trees, forest and marsh.
