Join us on Saturday to learn all about the history of local transport and trade! The tour takes a route along a stretch of riverbank via Navigation Wharf, now a forgotten backwater, telling the story of Malton’s 18th and 19th century transport and trade, and life before the motor car.

#Onthisday in 1932, a typhoid outbreak commenced in Malton. Unbeknownst at the time, to be typhoid, a young harvester demonstrated persistent symptoms of enteric fever and was taken to the Institution, later named Spring Hall, after seeing a doctor.

Malton and Norton have an expansive history with the horse racing industry, spanning centuries. In our town tour, we will explore this element of local history, touching on the medieval horse markets and the many 18th century coaching inns, covering key contributions to the successful racing town.

In the medieval period, to be interred within a coffin was not widespread. It may have been dictated by the condition of the corpse and thus comply with sanitary regulations, but it was often a sign of status. Coffins were, however, used to transport the body.
