Difficult as it is to get past stomach-churning rage at the loathsome misogyny of these people, I have also been wondering where the analyses are of what LLMs mean for theory of the knowledge worker, because these guys could not be clearer about having that archetype in the crosshairs:
“This technology disrupts humanities-trained — largely Democratic— voters, and makes their economic power less, and increases the economic power of vocationally trained, working-class, often male, voters,” Karp elaborated in a portion of the interview highlighted by The New Republic.

“And so these disruptions are gonna disrupt every aspect of our society. And to make this work, we have to come to an agreement of what it is we’re going to do with the technology; how are we gonna explain to people who are likely gonna have less good, and less interesting jobs.”

Screenshot from Telegraph article featuring a photo of Mallalieu sat on a bench with her dogs.

Text in article reads:

‘My peers accuse me of being posh, but my credentials would match, if not defeat, some of theirs’
Her cut-glass accent and love of fox-hunting must have caused her problems with her fellow Labour peers and MPs. “I think they think I am posh but my credentials would match, if not defeat, some of theirs. My grandfather was a butcher’s boy in South Shields.”“I was having dinner the other day near here with some farming friends and there was a group of youngsters sitting there, all still at school. Whenever I mentioned a politician’s name to them, they’d say, ‘no, not heard of them’. ‘Who do you really admire?’ I asked. Every one of them said Nigel Farage.”

Such encounters reinforce her belief in speaking her mind to her own party, even if she is accused of disloyalty. “People ask me why I am still in the Labour Party, and I ask myself sometimes. But someone has to stand up in the party and say things that need to be said. And I don’t have anything to gain or lose.”

Here she is going after Chris Packham in the latest of her many Telegraph articles. Her Wikipedia page lists previous members of her family who were MPs, notes she ran unsuccessfully for election in the 70s, was a barrister, then became a peer in 1991. This country
Telegraph page for Ann Mallalieu reads:

Baroness Ann Mallalieu, KC, is a leading British lawyer and Labour life peer in the House of Lords since 1991. She is the President of the Countryside Alliance and a former barrister.

The first article listed has the headline "As with Lineker, the BBC should cut ties with partisan Packham". The subheading is: the wildlife presenter is an activist with overly simplistic views about the 'evil' hunting community.

Sub-editing: a dying art.
Heat a wok over a medium-high heat and, once hot, add 60 ml (2 fl oz// cup) of the oil. Add the steamed eggplant, stir for a few minutes until it's slightly brown and cooked, then remove. Add the remaining oil and the beans and stir for a few minutes until they're slightly brown and cooked. Add the garlic and stir for 1 minute. Add the soy sauce and vegan oyster sauce and stir for 1-2 minutes until the sauce has been mostly absorbed by the eggplant, then add the spring onion.

Alessandro Manzoni, The Betrothed. From a chapter recounting the bubonic plague that swept Milan & the surrounding countryside in 1629.
A number of people were still not convinced that there really was a plague. And since some victims in both the lazaretto and the city had actually recovered, "it was said by the common people, and also by many biased doctors, that it was not a true plague, because otherwise everyone would have been dead" (Tadino, 93). It is always strange to hear the final arguments of an opinion eventually defeated by overwhelming evidence.

In 2011 Jackson, Vernon Reid and Melvin Gibbs formed a power trio called Encryption. During their trip to the Moers Festival in Germany, Jackson suffered a heart attack and underwent an angioplasty. The next day, he checked himself out of the hospital to play with Reid and Gibbs at the festival. Afterwards, Jackson checked himself back in for medical observation.

Same light ginger cat as in linked posts above, here perched on the edge of an office chair, his left paw visible holding onto that edge, his head resting on an outstretched hand. Staying with my folks atm, accompanied my dad home from a routine op yesterday. Today we're having a lot of fun with the NHS's advice on recovering from anesthetic, which includes being "careful about things like posting on social media, as you may not be thinking clearly".
Do:

have someone stay with you

eat and drink as usual, unless your hospital team gives you different advice

move around and keep active if you can – follow advice you're given about when to go back to your usual activities

contact the hospital if you have any concerns after you go home

be careful about things like posting on social media, as you may not be thinking clearly

Cooper-Lesadd, a former Conservative, was elected as a Reform MS for the Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg constituency in May's election.

Her swap to Plaid Cymru means she has been in three political parties since 2024.The nation is on a political journey, and I'm on a political journey as well, and it's about bringing people with us."

The new Plaid MS was also asked about the idea of the UK returning to the European Union.

"I've never, ever spoken about Brexit, and I'll be honest I voted Remain in the referendum and it's been quite difficult for me not to be able to talk about it, and it has damaged our trading relationships. So yes, I absolutely do support that."When I came into Reform, I did think that there was a certain element of being a broad church, and that's what I believed.

"It has become extremely narrow, whereas Plaid has a set of values that is values-based, and that's what I believe in."

The only possible alternative to the balloon? Two balloons
With a United States President increasingly unstable and hostile to the UK, the only obvious trustworthy military replacement for SUNFLOWER that could be available might be its French equivalent, Système de transmission de derniers recours (SYDEREC).

Unlike SUNFLOWER, SYDEREC has at least two balloons, both working and currently being updated, and two aerostat teams based in widely different locations. Operating plans for the French and British systems are closely aligned.

From the pop-up history of the Tottenham Green Under-Fives centre opened by Bernie Grant in 1985, on "non-racist childcare". This map is a treasure trove for anyone thinking about issues of social reproduction:
The nursery had a strong commitment to ‘non-racist childcare’ which included involving members of the black community including as staff members and having multi-cultural toys as an integral part of the nursery.

Still really interested to hear any thoughts on who might be interesting to read on this, assuming it's not wholly idiosyncratic to Theweleit.
Screenshot from interview with Theweleit where he says: you should always assume that a person does not exist alone. The number one should be cancelled. Philosophers and historians always start from the number one: the brain thinks, the subject acts. However, the individual subject does not exist; that is, a historical chimera. The subject begins between twos; then threes, fours - the constellation is expandable.

Overlapping mountain tops in a valley at Glencoe, green but with plenty of intricately ridged rocky outcrops in the familiar Highland style. Blue sky. The ridge of the mountain falls and rises either side of an inset, more distant, and smoother curved mountain top. To me, there is something about the lighting & the bareness of the landscape that makes it seem almost alien.

However, some experts had doubts. In 1959, oil sands pioneer Robert Fitzsimmons of the International Bitumen Company wrote a letter to the Edmonton Journal, saying "While the writer does not know anything about nuclear energy and is therefore not qualified to make any definite statement as to it's [sic] results he does know something about the effect dry heat has on those sands and ventures a guess that if it does not turn the whole deposit into a burning inferno it is almost sure to fuse it into a solid mass of semi glass or coke."

The author photo for the Wikipedia entry for the Wallonian poet Paul Dermée. He is wearing pince-nez glasses and has a squint which is dramatically accentuated by his wide-eyed smiling expression. He has a moustache like a wild & bellicose moth. His open-mouthed smile is slightly off kilter, which has the effect of making it seem like his teeth curve away in the middle of his mouth. His ears are sizeable with very pronounced, bulbous lobes, behind which his hair thickens as it falls wildly about his head. His attire is formal.

Freakin eerie
LLMs are most useful for people who know what they are doing – experienced people who can spot errors quickly, know the obvious pitfalls, and feel frustrated they can’t get more junior staff to do exactly the thing they asked for. They are made for the kind of people who think “if only there were 10 of me” on a regular basis and who might secretly wish they were still doing the job they got promoted from 15 years ago.

marmo manna e distruzione marble, manna, Annihilation
Wikipedia extract:
As a natural food substance, manna would produce waste products; but in classical rabbinical literature, as a supernatural substance, it was held that manna produced no waste, resulting in no defecation among the Israelites until several decades later, when the manna had ceased to fall.[33] Modern medical science suggests the lack of defecation over such a long period of time would cause severe bowel problems, especially when other food later began to be consumed again. Classical rabbinical writers say that the Israelites complained about the lack of defecation, and were concerned about potential bowel problems.

Murals in Southsea, Portsmouth 🤗
Mural on the side of a building next to an empty lot boarded off with graffiti fencing. The mural depicts a tree reminiscent of a stone pine above a kind of mound in the wilderness. Midway up the bifurcating trunk of the tree is a platform loaded with books. A humanoid with a crow's head is reading a book called The Tree of Knowledge. Lodged in some branches further up is a spaceship or diving bell, spherical with lower half red, upper half metallic grey, and two round portholes in which a city is reflected in silhouette. Side of a building on which most of the windows have been boarded up save two, which give onto more wooden boards in the interior. The ground level of the building is turquoise, upper levels dirty creamy off white. A sea monster dominates the whole surface in monochrome, grey & black and light in places. It holds a trident in its spindly arms that quite resembles the tail fin of the monster pointing upward to the side of it, a kind of web of tentacles. The monster has two small pectoral fins and a dorsal fin spine stretching to the head, which has two very human, soft eyes with deep brows & two fins for cheeks, below which there is no mouth - the head finishes abruptly. Two webby ears point upward like a crown. The lower body is scaly, there's a girdle midway up, and the upward body has strange blurry shapes that could be craters or barnacles.
The shop front next door has a smaller image painted on the ground floor level, of a manatee.

Attended a very illuminating conversation between translator & poet Sam Solomon & M Syd Rosen of Jargon ( a London cultural initiative with a focus on Yiddish) about the poet Celia Dropkin, who was active in New York in the early 20th c. Wonderful to hear readings from the Yiddish as well as English
Front cover of The Acrobat, selected poems of Celia Dropkin, translated from the Yiddish by Faith Jones, Jennifer Kronovet, and Samuel Solomon; foreword by Edward Hirsch Celia Dropkin's lyrics come fully loaded. They are erotically frank and emotionally unabashed, deeply engendered, relentlessly truthful. They are terse and musical, like songs, and carefully constructed to explode with maximum impact.
Edward Hirsch, from the Foreword

These remarkably vivid poems could be titled something like "Sensation-And How To Think It." They are carefully made, but the poet allows herself a certain carelessness to say the unsayable. She is interested in violence and tenderness together, as our nervous systems seem to be. There are lovely Reznikoffian glimpses of Manhattan; there are the pleasures of the short poem-the poem passing but lingering. The poems are of their time in the best possible way: you want to be there then, too. Early in the 20th century, in New York, having learned Yiddish or some other language new to you, watching a new age be born as if that were natural. This is a unique moment, still alive. The poems are still alive.
Alice Notley

Among the more experimental Yiddish poets in early twentieth-century New York, Dropkin was significant both for her exploration of open verse as a compositional strategy & for her assertions of female desire beyond the limits observed by most of her contemporaries, both in Yiddish & in English. Dropkin participated in the already active Yiddish poetry world, including the experimental In-Zikh (Introspectivist) poets, while developing more markedly transgressive themes than theirs: sexuality, depression, guilt & longing, fury, violence, even at its limits the representation of sado-masochism & other taboo, once hidden subjects. Her work in that sense is a further confirmation of Kenneth Rexroth's observation: "A good case could be made for the claim that the best writing done in America in the first quarter of the [twentieth] century was in Yiddish."

Jerome Rothenberg

Giovanni Arrighi, the Long Twentieth Century:
Last but not least, the escalation of armed conflicts between rulers disrupted the trans-European networks of trade on which they depended to obtain means of war and subjects depended for their livelihood. The costs and risks of moving goods across political jurisdictions increased dramatically, and supplies were diverted from the provision of means of livelihood to the provision of means of war. It is plausible to suppose that this disruption and diversion of trade flows contributed far more decisively than demographic and climatic factors to the sudden worsening problem of vagrancy and to the "subsistence crisis" which constitute the social and economic backdrop of the general crisis of legitimacy of the seventeenth century (cf. Braudel and Spooner 1967; Romano 1985; Goldstone 1991).
