It’s rush hour on a Thursday in Vancouver. The August heat has us pinned to the asphalt. I’m squirming in the back seat of this car, sweating through my cheap blouse and trying to find a way to sit that doesn’t make everything stick to everything else. The A/C is blowing warm air. Sweat beads down the side of the driver’s bald head. His glances in the rearview needle me, but my fretfulness is overshadowed by the terror growing in my chest. I can tell by the time on his dash-mounted phone that if I’m not where I need to be in exactly 15 minutes, I’m going to kill him, kill an unknown number of pedestrians, and probably get myself killed by a cop, down in the grass of the harbour park. Just under the horizon, death is awakening.
The others say that you can’t form habits if you want to re-integrate yourself...
