He was also a pioneer in the early days of the railway preservation movement, being chairman of the Tallylyn Railway Preservation Society (Britain's first preserved railway, still going strong over 70 years later). The line has a steam loco named "Tom Rolt" in his honour.

It's part of a preserved steam line, the Severn Valley Railway. The SVR provided the loco and carriages, and SVR staff were extras in the film. A replica signal box was erected in the cutting on the Kidderminster side of Bewdley Tunnel, and Highley signal box was used for the interior shots.
