Rousseau: Do you like cats? Boswell: No. Rousseau: I was sure of that. It is my test of character. There you have the despotic instinct of men. They do not like cats because the cat is free and will never consent to be a slave. He will do nothing to your order, as the other animals do.
from "the private papers of james boswell":
Rousseau: Do you like cats?
Boswell: No.
Rousseau: I was sure of that. It is my test of character. There you have the despotic instinct of men. They do not like cats because the cat is free and will never consent to be a slave. He will do nothing to your order, as the other animals do.
Boswell: Nor a hen, either.
Rousseau: A hen would obey your orders if you could make her understand them. But a cat will understand you perfectly and not obey them.
Boswell: But a cat is ungrateful and treacherous.
Rousseau: No. That's all untrue. A cat is an animal that can be very much attached to you; he will do anything you please out of friendship...

i miss chicago winters. we barely ever have them anymore - like nearly a month fewer days with a low below freezing compared to when i was a kid. mostly its just a brisk fall day out thru january.
chart of days in chicago with a minimum temperature of 32 degrees F or lower. in the 1980s and '90s, it was usually more than 130 days. we haven't had more than 110 freezing days per year since 2019, and only 6 years with more than 120 freezing days out of the last 15 years

saw this facebook post from the city of wheaton today. and, like, good work. but come on. suburbs, man…
fb post from the city of wheaton:
“did you know that you can now walk fro
one end of wheaton to the other using sidewalks?”wikipedia article on wheaton, showing it was founded in the mid 1800s:

“The Wheaton brothers arrived from Connecticut and in 1837, Warren L. Wheaton laid claim to 640 acres (260 ha) of land in the center of town. Jesse Wheaton later made claim to 300 acres (120 ha) of land just west of Warren's.[9][10] It was not long before other settlers from New England joined them in the community. In 1848, they gave the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad three miles (4.8 km) of right of way, upon which railroad officials named the depot Wheaton.[8][10] In 1850, ten blocks of land were platted and anyone who was willing to build immediately was granted free land. In 1853, the lots were surveyed and a formal plat for the community was filed with the county. The community was incorporated as a village on February 24, 1859, with Warren serving as its first president.[11] The village was later incorporated as a city on April 24, 1890, when the first mayor of the city was selected, Judge Elbert Gary, son of Erastus Gary and founder of Gary, Indiana.[11]”

went over to facebook just now…zuckerberg’s really serving up the slop. nostalgia baiting, but for dead strip malls
a post on facebook from some group claiming to be ‘growing up in chicago’

post texts reads: “another piece of park ridge history has quietly disappeared, taking decades of local memories with it”

then there are 3 photos. the first two are labeled 2012 and 2022, respectively. both show a nearly identically vacant strip mall. the third photo is labeled 2026 and it just shows construction fencing around the now torn down strip mall which had apparently been vacant for at least 14 years.

hmm, curious
from hyundai’s website:
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2 (FCA 2) monitors your surroundings and warns you if there is a risk of collision. After the warning, it assists with emergency braking if the risk of collision increases – with an oncoming vehicle or motorcyclist while turning left at an intersection, with an oncoming vehicle from the left, right or the opposite side. It assists with avoidance steering if there is a risk of collision with an oncoming/preceding/rear side vehicle or motorcyclist in the next lane-when changing lanes, and a vehicle/motorcyclist/pedestrian/cyclist partially in the vehicle’s intended path while driving.

no. we do not need to do any more studies or meetings. we know what makes things safer. failure to take swift action to correct the evils of the world when you have the power to do so makes you the evil.
text from the article:

"These include a pedestrian island at the intersection of Cullerton and South Ashland avenues, as well as several curb bumpouts, expected to be installed this fall, said Carl Schwarzer, assistant chief traffic engineer for the city’s Department of Transportation.

The upgrades come after Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez’s 25th Ward office asked the city to complete a traffic study last fall, said Lucia Moya Calderon, the alderman’s chief of staff.

The ward office then allocated $75,000 in menu money for a pedestrian island at the intersection where Herrera was killed. After reviewing traffic and crash data and meeting with neighbors, it recommended installing curb bumpouts that will be funded through the city’s Complete Streets program, Schwarzer said."

doing some car comparisons. what do you mean you made a car that is 2.5 feet longer, 7.3 inches wider, doesn't have a gas engine in it at all, and it still has less cargo capacity than a honda fit?

opening indoor spaces with close contact between people for more than a minute or two = very very very bad.

new conspiracy theory: everyone trying to force people back into crowded buildings 'for the economy' is actually a hardcore primitivist accelerationist, seeking to collapse society and make the survivors take up nomadic foraging out of necessity.

"I feel foolish. In a family full of Democrats, I really stood my ground twice to defend my stance. I feel like time and time again, all of the things that they pointed out would happen have ended up happening. And I looked dumb as hell believing in fairy tales and wishy-washy promises. I feel like if Trump would have approached the country and the problems that the nation has been having as passionately as he had his personal vendettas against Biden and those before and after him, he would have been an amazing president. I really did believe at one point that he was also a frustrated American who was so fed up he was going to make a world of difference."

here is the conclusion in full. please feel free to highlight which bits you think show that screen usage is not associated with negative impacts on motor development. is it just the fact that it wasn't 100% of studies finding the negative association, just the vast majority of them?
5. Conclusion
This systematic review offers a thorough examination of the relationship between screen time and motor development in children aged 0–7 years. Analyzing 24 studies, it reveals a generally negative correlation between excessive screen time and motor development, with particular concerns regarding both fine and gross motor skills. However, the association is complex, with the nature and extent of the relationship varying depending on the content and context of screen use. The findings suggest that prolonged screen exposure, especially beyond recommended limits, is largely associated with delays in motor skill development. Many studies indicate that children who spend more time on screens tend to score lower on motor development assessments, such as the ASQ‐3 and MABC‐2. This correlation is especially evident when screen time replaces activities that support physical and motor development, such as active play and interactive engagement. Nevertheless, not all studies included in the review show this negative trend. A few report minimal or no significant impact of screen time on motor development, suggesting that factors like the type of content consumed and parental involvement may help reduce some of the negative effects.
