It's that time of year again where my favourite psychological horror is on TV: Love Island! What better time to revisit one of our first blog posts? I examine how the contestants of Love Island live in a manufactured reality filled with gothic doubles. makingitwyrd.wordpress.com/2024/08/09/s...

A beach scene with text saying "The premise of the show is simple: find love, win money. Ten young, conventionally attractive (always thin, often white), single contestants enter the villa and must ‘couple up’ to stay in the game.".

With its child protagonist navigating a dark and distorted world, body horror, violence and gore, and chilling mysteries 'Little Nightmares II' becomes a fairytale for the modern moment. Human presence in this world only leads to pain and suffering... seem familiar?

Did someone say rebrand? 👻👻👻 Check out our fresh blog: makingitwyrd.wordpress.com

It's time for a change...👻👻👻

As we approach the end of our PhDs we have to face the fact that Lincoln may not be our home much longer. However, we love the gothic mayhem we have been creating and want to carry on with it long after we become 'Dr'.

So, a rebrand is in order. From today, Lincoln Gothic Group is transforming into....
Making It Wyrd!

Our content won't change - there will just be more of it! We might even dip our toes into the audio/visual medium (watch this space).

Spooky things incoming,

This episode of @americanhysteria.bsky.social has got me thinking about the role of the babysitter in horror. She is a figure of dichotomy: the virgin/temptress, domestic/public, precarious employee/authority figure. She is seen through the male gaze with often violent consequences

The Ballad of Wallace Island includes multiple gothic tropes: obsession, toxic nostalgia, isolated location, old Manor house, dead wife, 'backward' rural community. But its positive undertone keeps it from falling into gothic depair. It is almost anti-gothic

While perhaps not traditionally gothic, Piranesi engages with a variety of gothic tropes. It is full of mystery, the occult, ancient powers, and, of course, the ocean. An excellently crafted tale of how humans relate to the world around them.
