Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 12/08/2026I'm experimenting with a new transcript layout on talat.app Left: current view - new paragraph per utterance Right: condensed view - color coded utterances Thoughts? 000
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 10/08/2026I wrote (Claude wrote) a little app I can invoke with a hotkey and type any number into, and it'll bring up GitHub issue numbers ranked by relevance and recency. Enter gives me a preview inline in the window, enter again opens the link on GitHub. Saves me a ton of time over the course of a day 050
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 05/08/2026Notifications CTAs are better in the next release of talat. Today, the "Dismiss" button carries equal weight with the secondary CTA ("Stop recording" in the second shot). The danger CTA state ("Delete recording") is completely new - a glaring gap in today's notifications 🫣 000
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 04/08/2026If you use talat - how would you vote? In fact, why not go one better and answer directly on discord? discord.gg/EZfV9yHzXR 010
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 03/08/2026Yep, just standard accessibility APIs. Dead simple once you've already got the plumbing in place to paste into the target app in the first place 100
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 03/08/2026We have thousands of unit and in-memory database tests on talat, but the stability of our end-to-end suite - which drives the real desktop application we ship to users - has suffered recently. Not anymore. Pleased to get this one green again 🟢 070
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 01/08/2026Another talat dictation feature coming soon (built purely to scratch my own itch): refocus the *last* app you dictated into. Great when you're having e.g. an ongoing conversation with Claude and don't want to have to manually refocus your terminal to resume it 130
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 31/07/2026Looking forward to shipping this one. I can't count the number of times I've absent-mindedly hit escape during a long, rambling dictation and accidentally cancelled it. The next version of talat gives you two seconds grace to undo a cancellation and pick up dictating where you left off. 010

Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 24/07/2026I keep filling my M4 Mac Mini's 500GB disk. It looks like a combination of this enclosure: www.amazon.co.uk/OWC-Portable... And this stick: www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Inte... Should do the job? But, especially on the storage side, the options are... somewhat overwhelming. All help appreciated 🙏 100
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 24/07/2026Too early to say - we only switched to this model a week and a half ago when we hit v1.0.0. Up until then we were in pre-release, lifetime only, heavily discounted - practically giving it away! 010
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 24/07/2026I'll rack my brains. My dad has started fancying himself as a modern day Bob Dylan since retirement, but he's in his late 70s so might not be the perfect target audience... 120
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 24/07/2026I selfishly snuck in a new @talat.app feature purely for ME. My home office is upstairs, my wife's is downstairs, and if we're both on a call with our doors open (summer - it's hot), speech from her room could occasionally leak into my transcripts. Well, not anymore 😎 020
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 24/07/2026Direct link to the page in question: talat.app/buy 010
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 24/07/2026I'm aware that the @talat.app pricing page is... awful. Each pricing tier is basically just a different way of paying for the same thing: there is no feature gating on different plans, so I can't do a classic plan vs. feature comparison table. Roasts in the thread, please 👇 220
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 23/07/2026I had an old ChatGPT.dmg knocking about which was "only" 200MB (the cost of shipping an Electron app 🤷♂️), so to see it triple in size is completely staggering to me. (Obviously, 200MB is a ridiculous baseline, but that's a separate issue common to all Electron apps) 010
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 23/07/2026I hear you. I'm more optimistic. I'm a sample size of one, but personally I use LLMs to actually help keep the size of the binaries I ship (e.g. on talat.app) *down*. Obviously you don't need an LLM just for that, but every release is audited for security, size, etc. But yes: the laziness is real.talat.apptalat - the local transcription app for meetings, dictation, and recordingstalat is the local transcription app for meetings, dictation, and recordings: an AI note-taker that captures both sides of every conversation and transcribes in real time, entirely on your own compute... 100
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 23/07/2026We built a tool for @talat.app where AI agents can upload screenshots with context (branch, commit, description, etc), and humans and AI can search the 'gallery' I love it. It's a durable, visual evolution of the product, and lets agents attach and 'see' screenshots on GitHub PRs 010
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 23/07/2026Seriously - when did this become okay? When did we get this lazy? Over 600MB just for the download 1.4 gigabytes when installed wtf 3140
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Thanks for the recommendation Sam, appreciate it always 🙇🏻♂️ 110
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Hi Chris! You'll notice we do (now) offer one-off *and* subscription pricing (you pay as long as you get recurring value, we're incentivized to keep delivering it to you), though all of the other things you mention remain true. If you take talat for a spin, I'm all ears for feedback (good or bad) 010
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Hands up if you're happy to see those rate limits reset this morning 🙋 010
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 10/07/2026... while that feels AWESOME, 'winning' isn't quite the right term. Nobody wins. - the customer loses their money and their right to challenge further (I emailed them after they disputed, offering a full refund, they declined) - we still carry the mark of 1/N payments being disputed - 🤷♂️ (3/3) 010
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 10/07/2026...unless you go on to win the dispute. This was my first ever chargeback in *years* of online biz, and I knew it was baseless. On principle, and mainly to try and learn from the experience, I gathered my evidence, and contested it, not expecting much. Today, we won that dispute. (2/...) 100
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 10/07/2026Back in March, @talat.app got hit with a Stripe chargeback - when someone disputes a charge directly with their bank. Disputes cost us money and do permanent reputational harm. As a vendor, the odds are stacked against you winning if you contest, and electing to contest costs you MORE money (1/...) 120
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 09/07/2026If an LLM doesn't confirm one's quality once in a while, how are you supposed to go on? (I assume the confirmation was of *my* quality, not the code's - that would be silly) 000
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 09/07/2026Wait, doesn't *everyone* start their day like this? 110
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 09/07/2026If I had to take a shot every time I read the phrase "load-bearing", I'd be drunk every day by 7am 100
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 01/07/2026Thoroughly enjoyed it. A rarity I make it to the end of a Sam Rose post in one sitting! 010
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 01/07/2026New month, new me. I promise all diffs will be like this for the entirety of July. Honest. 🫡 130
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 29/06/2026June talat highlights: - Dictation mode - File import mode - Better multilingual support, especially for non-latin and right-to-left languages - Improved capitalisation and punctuation during real-time transcription - A more capable MCP connector that writes to talat as well as reading from it 000
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 26/06/2026This is a little bit insane, but I'm pretty sure I saw you in Thessaloniki airport on Tuesday. We were flying back to the UK, walking round the airport with our toddler to keep him amused, thought I caught a glimpse of you waiting by one of the gates 😅 110
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 11/06/2026I'm sure I sound like a broken record at this point, but I am enormously proud of the latest talat release. Every significant release we ship makes the last one feel obsolete. And we've already got a ton more awesome stuff lined up for the *next* release. 010
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 05/06/2026Boring 'tip': play with the appropriately-dotted ball. If you're playing with a seasoned player, make sure they bring one suitable for your ability, not theirs. Some folks I've played with insist on using the ball the pros use, purely as an ego thing. It takes a LOT of warming up to bounce at all. 020
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 04/06/2026So much work went into the 0.12.x release. We're getting ever closer to the elusive 1.0.0 milestone and the end of pre-release. I can't wait! 030
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 01/06/2026Final preflight checks for @talat.app 0.12.0 are underway 040
Nick Payne @makeusabrew.bsky.social · 28/05/2026Woohoo! No more bumping into ultra-conservative Claude design limits. Might not be celebrating if/when Claude Design chews through my quota faster than usual, but for now, awesome. 000
