I was standing there, in the Orleans Parish Assessor’s Office, a passel of official documents in my arms, when I noticed the city clerk was giving me a suspicious look. I asked if I had forgotten some important documentation—my passport, perhaps, or a comprehensive blood panel.
“Where are you from?” she asked.
As she could see from the pile of official papers, I was a resident of New Orleans.
“That’s not what I asked,” she said. “Where are you from?”
“New York City,” I admitted.
