Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 19/01/2026Atheist Delusions was helpful to me my freshman year! 020
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 19/01/2026I wouldn’t think so, but it does emphasize a lack of living infallibility I reckon. ‘The mind of the church’ has gotten used to push forward all kinds of things in the last century haha 010
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 19/01/2026It’s difficult isn’t it bc those ideas were standard bc they were the day’s consensus. Higher ones are today’s consensus. What bestows privilege on an idea other than “the mind of the Church”? 120
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 26/12/2025I’ve been think about doing the Eirenicon for quite some time, that’s awesome! 010
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 24/12/2025Isn’t the traditional covenant theology that the sponsors answer on the child’s behalf? What’s wrong with that? If we don’t like that, then we might need to become Anabaptists and wait for the child to speak for themselves? What/how else could we ask/tell the child? 230

Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 09/12/2025Never been in the American an BCPs bc we dropped all the rando black-letter days 110
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 08/12/2025It’s was in Cranmer’s BCP, it’s good enough for me! The “immaculate” part wasn’t tho, and I’m grateful for leaving it out 220

Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 26/11/2025(is joke, obvs I do too) But at first I was like, why are we reading different parts of the same book not in order?? And then I remember historical criticism. Alack. 100
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 26/11/2025I’m realizing the WOKE Common Worship lectionary believes in Deutero-Isaiah ⚓️ 110
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 26/11/2025A more exact translation would be Begetter and Begotten. John of St Thomas, Cursus Thelogici D. Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 25/11/2025For clarity, he writes: “For example, speculatively it may be probable that a child could be baptized in the form “In the name of the Parent, the Offspring, and the Proceeding One,” nor would it be illicit, because the truth or meaning of that expression signifies the same.” 030
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 25/11/2025Frankly, I myself don’t see a situation where this would ever be necessary. The demand for it could be approached in other pastoral ways I would think. 120
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 25/11/2025He says the gender neutral formula is a case of speculation—there’s no reason you’d ever have to think about using it. But now that this is something people actually wonder about, it’s an interesting question whether John would move the debate to the prudence category. 130
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 25/11/2025In this particular article, John’s drawing a distinction between speculative probability (“maybe it's valid”) and practical/prudential probability(“can I safely do this now?”). Only the latter justifies action, especially with something important like sacraments. 120
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 25/11/2025I’d never heard of this bit of John of St Thomas’ commentary on the Summa where he says baptizing someone in the name of the “Parent, Offspring, and the Proceeding One” would be valid, we just shouldn’t do it out of prudence ⚓️ 271
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 04/10/2025Few seem to have heard of mustum! I hadn’t before seminary 100
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 04/10/2025I don’t believe so, but bishops have typically not resorted to the penal measures of their Victorian predecessors 110
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 03/10/2025Very good! Much more gnashing of teeth to go around anyway 000
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 03/10/2025I’m sorry if I seemed uncompassionate and incurious! My whole DPhil is about how God saves people through other religions’ sacraments too. But our denomination’s whole schtick in contradistinction to other Reformed folks is an emphasis on tradition and liturgy. We don’t get to make it up wholecloth 220
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 03/10/2025Liturgical diversity is a very different thing from reading non-Christian texts alongside the Bible as if they were of equal authority in our community. I’m a let a thousand flowers bloom kind of person, but we do have a religion. It’s not bad to think our departed fam should have a say in our life 160
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 03/10/2025A very unenviable position. People I respect say she’s a fabulous pastor and manager. I’m sure there will be great speech writers to come. 020
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 03/10/2025I hate to be read as mean-spirited or something. I’m sorry if it was uncouth given the medical emergency that happened. But there really is no special NY context that makes non-Christian readings in a church service make sense in our religion, and I just can’t be made to feel ashamed for that. 000
Andrew Raines @makeitraines.bsky.social · 03/10/2025I’ve heard so many opinions about her so idk either 120
