This 30s clip (starting at 15:17) is pretty good. Talking about Magic running the legendary UCLA pickup games during that 90s basketball era. Reminds me of some oldschool FGC arcade shenanigans haha. youtube.com/watch?v=hOBZ...

Lanterns trailer looked pretty dumb, so i mostly gave the show a shot out of nostalgia for coach. But it's legit good and gotten more interesting every episode. Season finale is on Sunday, so it's worth avoiding spoilers if it might be your jam.

Seems to me there's two main ways to perceive capitalism: player-focused and product-focused.

One way i think about question-answering GenAI: In any large group of people, there are some highly reliable experts who consistently go out of their way to verify what they share, there are some intentional liars, and there are people who just pass along what they've heard (more or less).

I wonder if the most beneficial thing the chess community can do for humanity in this moment is act as a testbed for achieving consensus on a reasonable, verifiable limit on how deep engines should calculate. Otherwise what are we doing? Burning compute to solve chess faster? For whose benefit?

Knowing how little of value GenAI has produced across nearly every profession, isn't it wild how much of "AI adoption" is performative virtue signaling from people who made freaking out about virtue signaling their whole identity for years?

Props to Messi for actually retiring from international play when it made sense. Couldn't have been an easy choice with Argentina being a legit contender. I have a lot respect for people who pass the baton when it's time. Not everyone has the humility to do that.

There's so much bad design in the world. Like today i put my phone at the edge of the bed, then later i leaned on the bed to get up, and my phone fell down. It didn't have to be this way!

Kind of a chaotic game overall, but that Messi goal in Philadelphia was fun to watch. Gotta say i'm a fan of Messi playing on shaky/flawed teams to close out his career. Putting up big numbers in both directions. #SoccerHype youtube.com/watch?v=K_PA...

The new Spider-Man movie is pretty good imo. It's weird how Sony understands the need for A/B-list supporting characters for mainline Spidey movies, but still uses C/D-list characters for offshoots (which need the most help).

Finally got around to watching The Odyssey yesterday. I thought it was really good! Also read a couple critical articles making the rounds. I thought those were pretty good too. If you're new to professional criticism, you gotta understand that it's normal to be annoyed by half of what they say.

The game industry has never really understood celebrity power like movies/films do. Game studios are too afraid to let creatives be seen, for several reasons. They prefer to present their studio brand or main char as the celebrity, but there's only like 4-5 studios i trust enough to shift attention.

Now that it's over, i still think Messi should retire from international play. It's fair to say Argentina would've lost every knockout stage of WC2026 without Messi AND they lost to Spain because he was too old to run. Put 2008-2020 Messi into any Scaloni squad, they probably beat Spain. It's time.

Enzo ruined whatever chance there was of this being a decent game. Neither of his yellow cards were forced by Spain. Just another slogfest 1-0 extra time final in the end :(

If you haven't seen many Spain games, this is what they're all like. Not many dangerous scoring opportunities either way. On a good day, you might get a beautiful sequence of passes all the way through to goal. On a bad day, 0.1 xG for everyone!

World Cup final starting strong with at least 5x "Why is HE here??" before kickoff. Y'all ready for 35-minute halftime?!

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 19/07/2026

I hope Messi has a good game in his final world cup final, because he's brought me countless "How did he do that??" moments of joy over the years. It wouldn't be the first time he's played well against possession-heavy teams. I think Spain are slight favorites, but it'll be a fascinating matchup.

000

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 19/07/2026

It's rare to get such a clear narrative arc for a team within only a few games. England gutted it out against Mexico for a defensive win, fell back into the same mindset too early against Argentina, then consciously tried to advance the ball against France even when momentum was against them.

000

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 19/07/2026

Lol this game. Coaches laughing too.

England getting knocked out of the World Cup is always when you find out how England-centric your soccer media consumption is. Every football show/podcast i normally listen to is profoundly sad now.

Spain vs Argentina will be another interesting match. One of my favorite things about soccer is how the entire format of the sport changes depending on who you're up against. It's wild how dangerous teams can look until they play Spain, then they can't have the ball or get past midfield. #WC2026

Thoughts from England vs Argentina: • Sometimes you gotta wait for the 1st half brawl to end before the 2nd half soccer starts • Always a good day when attacking football beats pure defense • Argentina's tactical flexibility is incredible • Soccer is a lot more enjoyable if you like Messi

Claude commercial is a full 30 seconds of "We don't know what we're selling ... What if it was something you wanted?" Who needs a clearly defined product when you have deeply pensive ellipses?

Argentina play like they would greatly prefer a nap. I don't know why they keep trying to hold onto 1-0 leads. Their defense isn't good enough for it. Getting bailed out by pure luck at this point. #WC2026

Maybe there's hope for Spain, but i don't know if i've ever watched a World Cup with such a clear best team. I like the French players and the goal of this whole deal is to prove out the strongest team (while maximizing theatrics). But they're so unfairly ahead that it feels wrong to root for them.

000

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 09/07/2026

France is too good at counterattacking for a team that also has the ball most of the time. #WC2026

000

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 07/07/2026

What a wild game. Not at all how anyone expected it to go. Egypt scoring 2 goals on <1 xG is how you underdog. Almost had it, gotta be heartbreaking to be that close. But i think it was a fair result. Argentina got 3 goals on 2.8 xG and looked like they were winning pretty much the whole time.

000

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 07/07/2026

Lautaro plsss! That took more effort to keep out than score.

000

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 07/07/2026

Gotta be happy for Egypt but 20 more minutes of a fully parked bus isn't a fun time. That's just the game though i guess.

010

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 07/07/2026

Whoa, that's gotta be a record distance for a goal disallowed. Never seen anything like it. But it was an obvious foul.

000

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 07/07/2026

If Argentina loses this game, i don't think Messi should take penalties anymore at this World Cup.

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 05/07/2026

Soccer has the most elegant rules of any major sport. It just needs two things shown on a screen everyone (especially players) can see: 1. Extra time synced directly to ref's watch. Ref can still judge end of last play. 2. Offsides VAR review image shown within 5 seconds of the flag going up.

100

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 04/07/2026

Every time the score is 0-0 after 65 minutes in a game Mbappe or Messi started, i wonder if we've seen the end of goals in soccer.

Argentina and Cape Verde damn near reenacting the 2022 World Cup final. Hell of a shot from Lopes Cabral.

000

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 03/07/2026

The only way either of these teams gets past Spain is sheer luck, so i had no rooting interest here. But washed delusional Ronaldo is painful to watch, and what should be a good Portugal team on paper is also painful to watch. It's crazy that this is a massive improvement over the last World Cup.

Water breaks and VAR reviews are the two things that feel the most different (way worse) in the stadium than they do when you're watching at home. Thankfully US sports have already solved this problem, so we just have to wait for soccer to catch up to having cheerleaders.

Maj @majdotdev.bsky.social · 28/06/2026

The way brackets work is kinda interesting. If you randomly seed 32 teams, the two strongest teams can meet each other in the first round. Ignoring matchups and luck, you'd expect the best team to win and then win the whole tournament. But you can't say that the 2nd place team was the 2nd strongest.

I get that Messi signed up for every commercial that could be filmed in one day on one pitch. But what exactly is happening in this lowe's commercial? A bunch of lowe's employees made him wear a lowe's uniform to accept a soccer ball on their behalf? Will there be a game played? Does he have a team?

It's hard to understate how little individual WC stats matter. For big teams, World Cups are about winning final, semifinal, and maybe quarterfinal matches. For smaller teams, World Cups are about progressing as far as possible and creating remarkable stories along the way. Everything else is noise.
