What are *you* doing to stop the genocide? To build a better future for all of us? I'm a PhD student, in geography, at uToronto. I think about just futures in the context of climate change. More active on Mastodon: @majdal@social.coop #FreePalestine

Beautiful #infographic of aerial traffic out of #Beirut and #Damascus, from the 1968 master plan of Damascus, by Michel Écochard. There are many beautiful things to note, One of my favourite is that the map spreads eastwards as well as westwards. Riyadh is there, but has fewer flights than Karachi.
Infographic showing number of flights from Beirut and Damascus to cities across the world, grouped west (Europe and North America), east (Asia), and south (Africa).

My first solo academic publication is finally out. It's a reflection on the difficult 2 months of the #Palestine solidarity student encampment at #uToronto, edited by Esmat elHalaby and Maya Wind. doi.org/10.1215/0038...
Screenshot of the printed article, AGAINST the DAY section. by Majd Al-Shihabi, article title "The Camp and the Encampment: Reflections on Palestine Futures from the University of Toronto Student Encampment"

First paragraph reads:

"Seventy-six years after the Nakba, the meaning of the now ubiquitous
phrase “Free Palestine” has inevitably changed. The meaning of a free Palestine to a Nakba survivor living in the Burj el-Shemali refugee camp undoubtedly looks different than that of a student at the University of Toronto student encampment. Despite the differences, the tactics, hopes, and pitfalls of the student solidarity encampment echo that of the Palestinian refugee camp."

It’s fresh snow season, which means that we can see bicycle tracks and bike lane usage in # Toronto again. A very well-used bike lane, even in snowy weather! #topoli #onpoli
Two cyclists on a bike lane, ground covered in snow. Lots of tracks on the fresh snow.

How absurd is it that I live in downtown #Toronto, but it’s easier for me to go to # kitchener to buy Middle Eastern groceries, carry 3 heavy bags on the bus then train, than to go to the nearest Middle Eastern store, which happens to be in Scarborough? This is what bad planning policy looks like.
Three bags of groceries on a train platform, with a GO Transit train in the background.
