Thank you Common Ground Fair! It’s always fun to talk with Mainers who have questions and believe in the work we do! We learned that many people hold socialist positions and beliefs who don’t even know it, and the support our volunteers received was overwhelming. 🌹🚩

On Sept 2, 1945, the Vietnamese declared their independence. Hồ Chí Minh referenced the US Declaration. “All men are created equal; they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights..” The US then went on to wage a senseless war. Let us acknowledge the right of self determination.

Happy Juneteenth! Why do we celebrate this important holiday, and why do some conservatives hate that we do? On June 19, 1865, the Union Army finally took control of Texas, the last bastion of Confederate holdouts. They enforced the liberation of all slaves, over 250,000 left in the state.

Jess Falero has organized another solidarity event for the unhoused community as winter sets in and the sweeps continue. If you live in Portland, Maine, please ask your councilors to support Order 68-23/24 to stop encampment sweeps. council@portlandmaine.gov 207-874-8300
Solidarity Vigil
STOP THE SWEEPS
November 13, 2023 at 4PM at Portland City HallWe demand the Portland City Council pass Order 68-23/24 to stop encampment sweeps and enforcement of the camping and loitering bans.
Stopping these sweeps for the winter will save lives. The city’s enforcement of these policies has displaced hundreds of unhoused people in Portland and with winter upon us, encampment sweeps and bans on camping become even more dangerous.
Encampment sweeps are always violent and harmful. Forcing residents to abandon their encampments and relocate to secluded, riskier locations further from warmth and services is a recipe for disaster.
To become a safe, welcoming and equitable city, Portland must invest in affordable housing, an adequate shelter system, and greater social services instead of using the police to evict our neighbors.
STOP THE SWEEPS

Courts place people into conservatorship by deciding they're mentally unfit -- a term which has been used against marginalized people. While the provision in question is not currently enforced, it could serve as a trigger law like after Roe v Wade. Vote YES ON QUESTION 8 to protect voting rights.
What is Question 8?
Conservatorships are based on courts deciding that someone is mentally unfit to make their own decisions over their finances, housing, etc. The court can decide how they define "mentally unfit" and has historically used it to take agency away from marginalized people. Even though the Maine constitutional provision in question has been ruled unconstitutional by a federal court in the past and therefore cannot currently be enforced, as we've seen with Roe v. Wade, these decisions can be overturned at any time. It is important vote YES ON QUESTION 8 to strengthen voting rights for people in these situations before there is a chance for them to be taken away completely. How will it look on your ballot?
RESOLUTION, Proposing an Amendment to the Constitution of Maine to Allow Persons Under Guardianship for Mental Illness to Be Electors. Do you favor amending the Constitution of Maine to remove a provision prohibiting a person under guardianship for reasons of mental illness from voting for Governor, Senators and Representatives, which the United States District Court for the District of Maine found violates the United States Constitution and federal law?On Tuesday, November seventh,

YES ON QUESTION 6 to require that all official printings of Maine's constitution include the entire document, including Section 5 which states Maine’s commitment to honor “all duties and obligations … towards the Indians” accepted as part of Maine’s separation from Massachusetts in 1820.
what is question 6?
question 6 asks that all printed versions of Maine's constitution include the entire document. Section 5 of the Maine constitution is one of the parts that is no longer printed. It references Maine's commitment to honor "all duties and obligations ... toward the Indians" as part of Maine's separation from Massachusetts in 1820.
By including this in the constitution , it faces the dark history Maine has in disregarding the rights of its indigenous inhabitants. Transparency of the state's obligations to the indigenous people native to this land is an important step in the fight for indigenous solidarity and sovereignty for Maine.how will it look on your ballot?
RESOLUTION, Proposing an Amendment to the Constitution of Maine to Require All Provisions in the Constitution to Be Included in the Official Printing. We are once again asking you to vote NO on Question A 🙄 If Question A passes, thousands of tenants will be stripped of their tenant protections and once again be left at the whims of private landlords. We need every tenant in Portland to turn out on November 7th to tell landlords No! (on A).
Bernie Sanders with text reading "I am once again asking you to vote no on a"While Portland residents were out voting NO on A on June 13, 2023, landlords were collecting signatures to launch another attempt to roll back rent control.Meet Question A (again):
Question A would kick thousands of tenants off of our city's existing rent control protections by making units run by a landlord with fewer than 10 units exempt from rent control. We're mad, too.

Join us in voting NO on Question A on November 7th... again.

HURRICANE LEE HAZARD PAY UPDATE! All workers making less than $21 an hour must now make at least $21 an hour. Tipped workers get $10.50 + tips. This is active until the state of emergency is lifted. This excludes government employees of the City of Portland. Stay Safe this Weekend🌹
Governor Mills has issued a state of emergency for all of Maine. Here what this means for Portland workers:In 2020, Portland voters passed a strong minimum wage ordinance which included hazard pay for all workers called into work during states of emergency like COVID or this pending hurricane.Implementation was delayed until 2022, at which point the local emergency was quickly ended by a majority of the council after lobbying by big business and chamber of commerce. But hazard pay remains for future declarations, like right now.Since we're in state of emergency, all workers in Portland who aren't city employees normally making under $21/hour must be paid at least $21/hour throughout the duration of this declared emergency.
