James Mahy @mahybe.com · 19/09/2026So much dust you'd think the ancient Egyptians set up the network.... #tech #retro 022
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 18/09/2026Claude has spent the afternoon testing each scenario and measuring the difference across simulators and 3 old android devices. Across 100~ runs I've seeing on average a 50%~ improvement. I wish I'd done this change sooner! Thanks for reading 110
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 18/09/2026This has dramatically sped up the first time launch but also simplified upgrades because we're swapping out that old stinky database with a fresh one! The process is faster and keeps the users data safer. 101
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 18/09/2026Not only is that clunky but it means maintaining versioned migrations and backups in the code. So.... I've spent the last day rebuilding it! Instead of seeding the database on first launch - the app will release with a pre-seeded database. Every table, every column, every row, ready to roll. 100
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 18/09/2026The very first time you launch the app, it has to - create the database - encrypt it - seed it with thousands of records On older devices that can take 10-20s which feels like an eternity. Data migrations are also a risk, because every time we're modifying the live database on your device. 100
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 18/09/2026Okay, I am here to inform you that once again I have infact cooked! Something that's bugged me for a long time about Bearly Fit and that is the low end Android experience. Especially on first boot. #buildinpublic #reactnative #sqlite #claude 380
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 07/09/2026Installed HeidiSQL yesterday. Can't login today. Ah the #linux experience 🥰 000
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 07/09/2026🥰🥰🥰 Because I don't collect data it's difficult to get feedback sometimes. So it's really helpful when people leave feedback like this that tells me what's important to them. It also shows that's not everyone thinks about health in the same way. Everyone has different priorities. #buildinpublic 120

James Mahy @mahybe.com · 02/09/2026Dear Companies, Did you know that if you hire me, Not can I afford to pay my bills, but I can also afford a Microduck. And isn't that what we all really want in life? For me to be able to buy a micro duck? Thank you for your consideration 120
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 02/09/2026Yet, it feels like the world crumbles beneath us under the weight of humanities own hubris. I haven't slept. This might be a little melodramatic. 5/5 000
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 02/09/2026We've gone from a world of dreamers, where anything could be possible to people not even sure if the world will even be here in the next 40-50 years. It's a fascinating time to be alive. We've never had so much access to information, resources and for many parts of the world freedom. 4/5 100
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 02/09/2026Did you know that in 2012 - 14% of people thought the world will end in their life time? Now, in the US + Canada it's about 30%. How crazy is that? 3/5 100
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 02/09/2026Although some of the predictions are fairly close, they're only just starting to become more of a reality 26 years later. It makes me think of all the bold predictions people make these days about work, life, relationships and just the world in general. 2/5 100
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 02/09/2026It's fascinating to see how Victorians imaged our world. These post cards dated from 1900-1910 are meant to depict how the world would look in the year 2000. - Flying cabs - Automatic cleaning machines - Remote control farms - Barbers done entirely by machine 1/5 #world #future #tech 100
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 01/09/2026Sometimes I ask Claude to roast me, just to feel something. #developerlife #claude 020
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 31/08/2026The app handles this perfectly, but then what if I want to create a plan from that workout session? I can either - Go back, find it, repeat it - Manually make a plan Or... spend a couple hours adding a button to create a workout plan from a workout session. 4/4 000
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 31/08/2026So today I decided to work on a small feature that's been bugging me for a while. Sometimes, I go into the gym and don't really have a plan. Maybe I want to target upper body but I'm just kinda feeling my way through. 3/4 100
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 31/08/2026But... validating the Nutritonal data is taking longer than I hoped even with the help of LLMS. Unfortunately that leaves in a little bit of an awkward spot where I don't want to start anything too big, but also I want to entertain people choosing to spend their time with me. 2/4 100
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 31/08/2026Sometimes simplicity is all we need. When I stream I usually try to avoid using LLM's. People come to hang out and see my code badly so I personally think it's boring for viewers to watch me baby sit an LLM. 1/4 #buildinpublic #bearlyfit @bearly.fit 140
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 30/08/2026I've been a long time Windows 10 user and I recently decided to move to Linux. James Mahy @mahybe.com · 30/08/2026And that's the part i think a lot of creators get wrong, especially now that everyone is using AI. They focus on delivery and not discovery. 3/3 000
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 30/08/2026If no one can find what you've built or the messaging is confusing, then it doesn't really matter how long you've spent building. I see so many store listing with walls of text explaining every last feature but ignoring the ones that people are actually searching for. 2/3 100
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 30/08/2026Today I have been mostly cleaning up the new store images. I don't think people realise how much "extra" work goes into product development. Building the product is just the start. 1/3 #buildinpublic #startup 250
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 30/08/2026My one regret is that I didn't spend more time arguing with people online 010

James Mahy @mahybe.com · 21/12/20255/5 The images live in the bundle so they needed to be copyright safe and I decided this was a perfect opportunity to use AI! Let me know what you think of the results... 010
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 21/12/20254/5 I needed to know how long I had until a user would hit that 20mb limit. So today I built tools which create years worth of mock logs with a sensible distribution of selfies. 110
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 21/12/20253/5 And I have a cloud back up solution which will - Keep user data secure, - Ensure only the owner has access - Have zero public discoverability - Keep my costs down But the backup solution is going to take me a few months to build and I'm getting ready to launch the new features. 110
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 21/12/20252/5 Even with years worth of logs, the backup size is only 1-2mb. That was - until I decided to introduce progress pictures... Essentially creating a ticking time bomb for cloud backups on Android. I managed to get selfies down to 100kb~ with good enough quality for tracking progress. 110
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 21/12/2025Android makes cloud backups complicated. So I had to spend today creating mock data to test backup sizes. Android cloud backups have a 20mb per app limit. So far that's not been an issue for @bearly.fit. 1/5 #developerlife #react #buildinpublic #fitness 172
Reposted by James MahyBearly Fit @bearly.fit · 03/10/2025People always ask me "Why the Teddy Bear" When I built Bearly Fit I had a few core problems I wanted to solve. 1. Control of my data 2. Completely offline 3. To log exercise/nutrition/body in one app 4. An app that wouldn't shame me and doesn't take itself seriously #buildinpublic #health 1/4 142
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 22/09/2025I'm not trying to compete with other apps or build yet another investment driven tech business. I'm building something cool, with bears. 5/5 000
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 22/09/2025But at the same time - It costs me nothing to run (except my own time) - I can build things that work for me and the community - I maintain creative control And most importantly I can build stuff because it's cool. I don't need to justify why I'm building a feature, I can just build it. 4/5 100
James Mahy @mahybe.com · 22/09/2025It's also why so many businesses quickly destroy the good will of their communities by littering their expensive products and subscription services with ads. I don't want that for Bearly Fit. Sure, it takes me a little longer to build stuff. I'm a solo dev with a life. 3/5 100
