A Subtle Magic
At the Keep, those with magic bond with fantastical creatures. The strongest bond to powerful creatures like gryphons and dragons. Rayen bonds to a humble koi fish.
Rayen's magic is the weakest in his class, but he refuses to give up on his dream of being a respected mage. He works hard on developing his magic to become a healer. But when he nearly stops a teacher's heart during magical combat training, he learns that his weak magic enables a much rarer, dangerous talent: subtle manipulation of the essence of magic itself.
Suddenly Rayen is sought out by classmates and teachers who’d once written him off. Some want to use his power for their own gain, like creating potions that could strengthen-or destroy-a person’s magic. Being a weak mage had its challenges, but at least it was straightforward. Now Rayen needs to learn who he can trust, and fast, or he risks endangering his friends, their creatures, and even losing the gentle koi that gave him his chance to be a mage
