The Bobby Bison Newsletter (G.W.S. Trow, 1975)
Bobby Bison is bearish. Will Bobby Bison continue to be bearish? In the current issue of the Newsletter, Bobby Bison says that “Indicators indicate accelerating clumps.” BOBBY BISON HAS BEEN RIGHT IN THE PAST! IT WOULD BE FOOLISH TO IGNORE THAT FACT.

Last year Bobby Bison successfully predicted the carpet glut. Bobby Bison predicted the unprecedented drop in urban trimmings. Bobby Bison walked out on opening night. WHAT DOES BOBBY BISON SAY NOW?

Bobby Bison is bearish. Or is he? Bobby Bison points out that many stocks are now selling at tiny, tiny multiples of their nutritional value. Bobby Bison points out that some stock is selling for less money than is kept in the average petty-cash drawer. Among other “undervalued” stocks Bobby Bison offers for consideration in the Newsletter are:

American Biological Cornell Cheese Multipromo Stores Debonair Brands BeNeLux Pumpco Pretty PaperOf course, Bobby Bison doesn’t necessarily like these stocks. Not by a long shot. In point of fact, Bobby Bison loathes all stocks. That is why the Bobby Bison publications (the monthly Newletter and the yearly Trend- Leaf) are so important to the financial community. The Bobby Bison approach provides a needed counterbalance to conventional Wall Street wisdom. Whereas other newsletters offer “buy-sell-hold” advice, Bobby Bison, says, “Forget it.” Time and again, issue after issue, stock after stock, Bobby Bison says, “Forget it.” Harsh advice? Perhaps. But consider this: In 1971, when others were promoting “growth stocks,” Bobby Bison said, “Forget it. Dump them. Hold on to your cufflinks.” Fortunes were made because of that advice, and other fortunes lost.

Get our Classics newsletter to discover timeless gems from The New Yorker archive.

Does Bobby Bison Still Predict a monetary System Based on Cufflinks?

IN the 1975 Trend-Leaf, Bobby Bison explains why he eschews currency of any kind and why he says that “It’s all over but the hoarding.” Bobby Bison prophesies ragged lawns, scalper’s prices, uninvited guests, unwelcome snares, and double-digit profusions but concludes that the shrewd investor (one subscribing to the Bobby Bison publications) can still turn a tidy profit if he keeps a balanced stud box and a loyal tenantry.Which Bobby Bison Publication Is Right for Me?

THE Bobby Bison Newsletter is a nonrecurring front-loading ancillary for businessmen and serious investors. It includes specific sell-dump-shred information on a broad range of stocks, is published monthly, and costs seven hundred and fifty dollars a year. The yearly Trend-Leaf is a five-hundred-page reference work detailing broad-view gluts and ballpark down-ages, and is available for seven hundred and fifty dollars.

Is Bobby Bison Serious?

POSSIBLY. Of course, Bobby Bison I might be having a vicious private joke at your expense. This is why Bobby Bison publishes his Secret File Key. The Secret File Key, available monthly at one thousand dollars an issue—or ten thousand dollars a year— tells subscribers which parts of the Newsletter and the yearly Trend-Leaf they may be safe in taking seriously. Last year, for instance, purchasers of the Secret File Key learned months ahead of time that a piece of “investment advice” to be published in the Newsletter was just a malicious prank. The money saved by Secret File Key subscribers who knew not to take Mr. Bison seriously in this instance more than paid for their subscription to the Secret File Key. ♦

snails have many enemies
66. Each pen you build must also keep the snails safe from their enemies. Snails have many enemies. You must be careful to protect them from:
- mice and rats
- shrews and moles
- walking insects that live on the ground such as ants and beetles
- slugs and other snails that eat snail meat
- birds that eat snails
- frogs and toads
- thieves

In the case of computer technology, there can be no disputing that the computer has increased the power of large-scale organizations like military establishments or airline companies or banks or tax collecting agencies. And it is equally clear that the computer is now indispensable to high-level researchers in physics and other natural sciences. But to what extent has computer technology been an advantage to the masses of people? To steel workers, vegetable store owners, teachers, automobile mechanics, musicians, bakers, brick layers, dentists and most of the rest into whose lives the computer now intrudes? These people have had their private matters made more accessible to powerful institutions. They are more easily tracked and controlled; they are subjected to more examinations, and are increasingly mystified by the decisions made about them. They are more often reduced to mere numerical objects. They are being buried by junk mail. They are easy targets for advertising agencies and political organizations. The schools teach their children to operate computerized systems instead of teaching things that are more valuable to children. In a word, almost nothing happens to the losers that they need, which is why they are losers. It is to be expected that the winners - for example, most of the speakers at this conference - will encourage the losers to be enthusiastic about computer technology. That is the way of winners, and so they sometimes tell the losers that with personal computers the average person can balance a checkbook more neatly, keep better track of recipes, and make more logical shopping lists. They also tell them that they can vote at home, shop at home, get all the information they wish at home, and thus make community life unnecessary. They tell them that their lives will be conducted more efficiently, discreetly neglecting to say from whose point of view or what might be the costs of such efficiency.

Should the losers grow skeptical, the winners dazzle them with the wondrous feats of computers, many of which have only marginal relevance to the quality of the losers' lives but which are nonetheless impressive. Eventually, the losers succumb, in part because they believe that the specialized knowledge of the masters of a computer technology is a form of wisdom. The masters, of course, come to believe this as well. The result is that certain questions do not arise, such as, to whom will the computer give greater power and freedom, and whose power and freedom will be reduced?

Part of the charm and communicative power of folk art is the "crudeness" i.e., the absence of an expert hand in execution. AI art simulates the expert hand, and thus fails to meet the "folk" aesthetic. MS Paint memes have the naive quality that AI lacks (see attached)
