Memo can handle inner demons; but what’s a life coach to do if the demons are real? When it turns out his new client's manor is haunted by the bitter ghosts of a centuries-long clan war, this life coach must coach for the dead. THE BURNING CROWS OF MCDOWELL MANOR (85k) #DVpit #A #H #DIS #CI

Sounds like a good read - does the ending feel satisfying? Are the characters ultimately likeable or at least compelling?

Zoe Navas @magicbookworm.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
I love the movie too, but I liked how the characters were difficult and hard edged in the book. They needed each other that way, and they smoothed each other out with the friction of their contact. Collin needed a nasty Mary, and Mary became kind by helping Collin.

It's so amazingly sad and then so fulfilling. All the suffering in that story had a payoff in the later pages, and despite the tragedy, it managed to be uplifting overall. What a book.

I want to read a book with a ghost story that builds on tragedy in the way that HOLES by Louis Sachar does - with purpose, closure, and a deeply satisfying conclusion. Help? #BookSky

I had to read this post three times because I just kept seeing "The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle" and being confused why you listed it twice 😆

Ahhh I see! I appreciate that because the mc is both a mother and a daughter, we sort of see both ends from a family perspective--but you're right we don't get a child's perspective, which would have been cool contrast, e.g. adults recognize the horror, while kids are blinded by the wonder.

Thank you for the info! I'm wondering less about mechanics and more about Travis' personality? I've seen a couple unique takes on Death.

Zoe Navas @magicbookworm.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
I get that the climax happening off-screen and without the MC could be disappointing, but I think it made a powerful point about healing their family. For once, the MC could rest, because her mom (who was also a victim of intergenerational trauma) finally stepped up and took responsibility.

If you haven't read Terry Pratchett yet: Do you like Phantom of the Opera? Try MASKERADE. If you're into dragons, try GUARDS! GUARDS! Ancient Egypt? PYRAMIDS. All have a healthy dose of fantasy, philosophy, and humor. Happy reading!

I get that... chronic pain is depressing enough on its own! I don't know if it aligns with your vision, but maybe if you did something like HOLES by Louis Sachar somehow, where the misery builds a foundation for purpose and healing. I don't mind a dark read if there's satisfaction and/or hope.

On the one hand, REBECCA by Daphne du Maurier has beautiful prose and a satisfying conclusion. On the other, it made me think "would someone please just burn this whole awful house down?", and there wasn't even any evil fungus. #MicroReview #BookSky
