I think they got it right. From birth to five-years-old, aka learning to talk years, we lived in WA but it was just across the Columbia river from Astoria in Naselle and all our tv was from Portland.

Water flows over this stone fountain almost invisibly. The fountain, created especially for this space, is one of the last sculptures by Isamu Noguchi, the American-born sculptor and designer. Noguchi made the work in Japan: the light stones in the fountain bed come from the Isuzu River—which flows near Ise Shrine, one of the most sacred Shinto sites—while the dark basalt stone that forms the fountain itself is also from Japan.

The fountain and its setting form an abstract garden that evokes the close relationship between interior and exterior space. The wood screen (whose construction was approved by Noguchi) is an architectural convention dating back to the seventeenth century, whereby an interior view is focused on a specific frame of a garden. In Japan, gardens often contain a stone basin to collect water, conveyed through a bamboo pipe from a nearby mountain stream. But here, the water emerges from the depths of the rock, uniting the disparate elements of water and stone.

my dad and I went down on the 4th to see him in the hospital and to be with my grandma. I still have the doily he gave me from his hospital tray, I was so worried he wasn't going to make it.

New standard allows use of AI
The revised standard says facilities can use artificial intelligence tools such as machine-learning-based translation or generative AI for “noncritical communication” or “informal interactions with detainees.” That communication could include giving and receiving information to or from detainees during intake, having conversations with detainees in housing units and responding to a detainee’s grievance or other concerns, it says.

Venters called the changes alarming because grievances often include “very urgent or even emergent information such as when a patient has been denied lifesaving care.” He said the rule also leaves unclear whether health assessments, crucial to flagging medical and mental health conditions, could be conducted through AI.

ICE said the standards ensure contractors provide interpretation and translation services “at no cost to the detainees.”

In ruling on these motions, the Court is reminded of a line often repeated in discussions around immigration policy: If people wish to immigrate to the United States, they ought to “follow the law” and “do things the right way.” This case serves as a perfect example of immigrants doing just that. Plaintiffs and their members have observed the legal processes that Congress enacted by statute and USCIS promulgated by regulation so that they may one day obtain immigration benefits. They have, for example, filed the appropriate paperwork, paid the required filing fees, submitted to the requested biometrics collections, and attended the necessary inperson interviews. Even so, Plaintiffs and their members are stuck waiting, for months on end, for benefit requests that USCIS refuses to adjudicate.

But the rule of law has to apply to everyone equally and, as evident here, USCIS has neither “followed the law” nor “done things the right way.”
