Swing Left has "Reach Races" as one of their fundraising options, if you don't want to go through the DCCC. Most of their other funds focus on swing seats, but they do give the option of funding some longer shots. swingleft.org/funds

That's what I say to the people who say "but I voted last time and the Dems didn't fix everything!" Of course not. We're in a mess it took Republicans half a century to create, and we need to hold power by more than bare majorities for a lot more than one election cycle to get it all fixed.

"No federal property may be named for Donald Trump or any of his cabinet secretaries." "individuals and companies that contributed to Trump's damned-fool ballroom may not receive government contracts."

Yeah, but he WANTED it, and he even wanted it to be public. He wanted to be a martyr to his cause, which is enough reason to drop him into a prison laundry for decades.

If anyone out there is voting in Virginia and hasn't yet, be sure to vote the constitutional amendments. There are three: - reproductive rights - marriage equality - restoring voting rights to felons who have completed their sentences

Honestly, pretentious teenagers were writing short stories and plays about this stuff back in the 80s. I was an actor in one, playing a worshipper of the created savior. A bit embarrassing in retrospect, like many teenage pretensions, but at least adult me doesn't believe in Sam Altman.

Comedian Josh Johnson has a bit about how, of all the laws Trump is breaking, the law of gravity is the most perplexing.

They're always trying to find something that sells like beer to people who don't like beer. Those of us who like beer will never agree that this is valid.

The current survey was limited to young people. The 1983 survey covered all ages. It stands to reason that older people have had time to accumulate more lifetime partners. Not all do, but people who got divorced in the 70s and 80s seemed to get around.

Just having a male partner can mean a huge jump in a woman's domestic labor, even before kids. Many a man has argued that the work is unnecessary, that he wouldn't do it for himself alone and that she's doing it as a personal quirk or a kind of hobby. In short, a lot of men occupy the "kid" job.

I recommend it highly as a hobby, but it's hard as hell to make a living in the arts. Don't let them put you on the board, though, because that's as much like regular work as being on any other board.

Improv is more common, but performing arts classes in general are fun for people who are sick of their day jobs. Best to not get big ideas about making an arts career stick, though, because then you risk getting sick of that. And poverty.

Didn't they have gyms in Ancient Greece? Like, the ones ours are named for? Maybe the agricultural laborers didn't need to use them, but there have always been people who didn't do agricultural labor.

What's the baseline for "expected"? If they're counting relative to 2020, of course it's down because more people are planning to vote in person. I voted early in person already, and the place seemed busy for this early in the process.

I've seen a couple of niche uses for the technology that make sense -- none for me personally, but a few for other people who are situated differently. That's not nearly enough to justify the build-out they're doing and the resources they're using. We are not here for the benefit of the technology.

See, David Brooks and his piece on how Italian delis are intimidating to working class people. Maybe they're a snobby, acquired taste to people named Brooks, but did he think the people working there went to Princeton?

Also, we don't know what will happen if current non-voters get mobilized. Trump mobilized non-voters, and it's possible that the remaining non-voters are just as weird or even weirder. I think we need broad-based civics education on things like due process and how tariffs work.

The last time we were discussing acquaintance rape on campus, it stood out to me how many cases involved sexual practices other than vaginal sex. I'd submit that most women who consent to "sex" without further specifying are consenting to vaginal, not anal or humiliation rituals.

On the other hand, if even Third Way wants significant changes, that bodes well. Although I think we need more than term limits.

The fact that lots of new people are upset now is how we get the numbers to win, so that's all good. I still wonder what's wrong with people that they had to touch the hot stove to learn why you don't want to touch the hot stove, and what we can do to keep them from touching it again, but even so...

That women in France was actually married to the man who drugged her and invited other men to have a go. Consenting to SOME sex never means consenting to all possible sex, and bringing in a group of other people is definitely not included in most normal sexual consent situations.

I'm for expanding the power grid and electrical infrastructure if it incorporates carbon-free power and replaces fossil fuels. But if even one kilowatt goes for data centers that support AI and surveillance tech, impale it on a meat hook and leave it to die.

In "the olden days" kids had packs of siblings and cousins and neighbors to run around with. Even day care, when needed, was probably just a different house with some more kids. But modern families and housing patterns don't have that built in, so it has to be done deliberately.

They also don't see kids as people separate from the need to care for them. The fact that kids like other kids and sometimes get bored around adults used to be dealt with by letting them run around the village, but now they need a specific place to go.

But we should fund the ones that do, and people who want to teach history or literature should get substantive training in those fields even if they go to a teacher's college and major in education.

I think there's a place for post-secondary vocational training that lower middle class families can afford and that doesn't have to subsidize a full research university. That used to exist in teacher's colleges, some of which have become full universities. They don't ALL need to do that.

I wonder who is suffering more in this moment, those of us who saw Trump as he is from the beginning and have been fighting MAGA all along, or those who are just realizing it now. The first group is very, very tired, but in many cases immunized against the worst emotional swings.

Republicans test-ran the trans panic in Virginia in 2021, before they rolled it out nationwide. It worked -- once. By 2025 it had lost its power. Other states may not be there yet, depending on when they've had contested races for governor and senator, but eventually people will tune it out.

But not right away. There was open defiance at first, then sneaking (as if we can't smell it), jealously guarding remaining turf, and then finally giving up and smoking outdoors. Over there. And a lot of adults quit outright because it was socially and professionally impossible to keep up.

Zero public resistance because of several decades of fighting about it. Same with marriage equality. Change came slowly at first, then all at once.

And where you do have a structured, clearly delineated task that computers can help with, someone's probably automated it already with simpler tech and at lower cost. People have been working on that for decades. If that's all AI can do, the cost/benefit doesn't work out.

Way back before the dawn of time, I got that kind of advice from older female relatives. It's why I didn't go to family events for over a decade, until after those women died off. That there's a new batch, and that they charge money, is horrifying. At least old-world grandmothers did it for free.

I really liked being Catholic in the 70s. After Vatican II but before the Reagan-era rightward turn.
