When you just learned about the preschool potluck yesterday, and it’s scheduled to start 15 minutes before you normally pick up your twins… you bring the donuts.

How a public library's summer game took over a Michigan city
Summer in Ann Arbor, Mich., means thousands of people hunting for hidden codes around the city and reading books to earn points. It's part of a popular game organized by the public library.

Peak #AnnArbor townie: wearing a library summer game shirt, refreshing the election results to see whether the library will get even cooler, smelling a skunk from my open window.

Twin toddler bedtime stories: A: “once upon a time, there was a rabbit, and a bunny, and a rabbit, and a bunny.” B: “what did the rabbit, and the bunny, and the rabbit, and the bunny do?”

There was a big #WeAreDEI rally and march at U-M this evening. Started on the Diag, then off to Ruthven where the 4 new resolutions of the faculty senate were posted on the central administration's doors.
#WeAreDEI rally on the University of Michigan Diag, in beautiful evening light.Faculty senate resolutions are attached to the doors of the Ruthven building beneath a #WeAreDEI sign. The logo above the doors says "Truth conquers by itself".

For @truthout.org , @hebagowayed.bsky.social and I wrote about how universities have opened the door to Trump’s authoritarianism by suppressing pro-Palestine voices and how they must commit to the principles of academic freedom and free expression before it is too late.

As ICE Jails Palestinian Protester, Universities Must Commit to Academic Freedom
Universities may sow their own demise if they continue to aid the suppression of pro-Palestine campus movements.

These data were used to make crucial policy decisions, and to provide many countries with vital information on child health, nutrition, and other indicators.

At this moment when science is under threat, this feeds the narrative that people who use these data are removed from real life, which couldn’t be further from the case.

Heart wrenching decision, the DHS are an incredibly important data source. They have long been the only option available for studying change over time in individual- or family-level outcomes across Africa. My heart aches for everyone whose research, teaching, and other work depends on them.

Twins just discovered the toddler sized carts at the grocery store… one went on a joyride through the frozen aisle, while the other knocked over some flowers. Both were still given suckers at checkout, which proves that people are good at heart.

A little bit about my research: I am studying geographic disparities in health and mortality and their environmental and structural determinants. My previous research focused on state and county levels, but I am now shifting to an individual-level approach for better causal inference & explanation.

Michael Burawoy called me a “deviant demographer,” with his characteristic twinkle in his eye. I loved his class, it was the first time I really saw theory as a conversation, as something to build with others (those living and already passed).

At either site, you need to have already received permission to access the datasets you are downloading, and new requests can't be made.

Maggie Frye @maggiefrye.bsky.social · 31/01/2025
oh, that's good to hear! I must have misunderstood what my student said happened when she tried to access the data via DHS website. But, also this seems to mean that IPUMS doesn't provide additional access not available through DHSprogram.com, for right now at least.

Maggie Frye @maggiefrye.bsky.social · 31/01/2025
So, a partial solution (DHS website is completely down) but the problem remains!

Maggie Frye @maggiefrye.bsky.social · 31/01/2025
I just went through this yesterday... IPUMS allows you to download a DHS survey only if you already have permission from DHS, you must use your DHS login credentials. We tried accessing additional countries/surveys and were not able to do so, even despite being an existing IPUMS and DHS user.
